Abstract

Motivation is essential in every aspects of life especially in the academe. It is said that there is an impact of age-related changes in affect and interest regarding motivation. The study aimed to identify if there is a significant difference between the reward preferences and motivation in high school and college students. The study also investigated whether gender and school levels have an effect on motivation. A group of 117 first and second year high school studentsand 91 third and fourth year college students were chosen randomly. The chosen groups were administered questionnaires regarding reward preferences and gender-level interactions. The result implies a significant result on extrinsic motivation of high school students. However, scores on intrinsic motivation shows no significant result. It is revealed that high school students are more extrinsically motivated compared to college students. Other findings indicate that when male high school student enters college, their intrinsic motivation increases whereas when female high school students enter college, their intrinsic motivation decreases
