Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand the psychological effects experienced by the victims of rape. This study also tried to answer the following specific questions : 1. What are the psychological effects of rape? 2. How do victims cope with the stressful situation? 3. What are the changes in the life of the victim after the incident of rape? After having been able to gather and collect all the information needed, the following were revealed : 1. Victims of this very unfortunate act were not only harassed physically but even psychologically. The psychological effects experienced by the rape victims were shame, disbelief, embarrassment, fear, self-blame, depression, depersonalization, sleep disorders, paranoia and emotional isolation. 2. The support of family, friends and institutions helped the victim cope with the stressful situation. 3. The tragedy had a strong impact to the victims that caused a lot of major changes in their lives. Some of the respondents blamed themselves for the incident some even became pessimistic in life. However it also contributed some positive points such as it developed a closer relationship with the family and stronger faith in God.
