Abstract

Two closely related species of Alocasia; namely, A. clypeolata and the proposed new species were compared using karyotype analysis and leaf anatomy. Both species have the same karyotypic features having a chromosome number of x = 6 or 2n = 12, with a median centromere position and metacentric chromosomes. Based on leaf anatomy, the epidermal pattern of A. clypeolata is polygonal while the proposed new species is sinuous. Stomatal length and width of A. clypeolata is bigger compared to the proposed new species. The stomatal density is comparatively higher in the proposed new species while it is lower in another species. Based on the findings, karyotype analysis cannot be used to separate the two taxa while leaf anatomy is useful in delimiting the two species.
