Abstract

This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial activity of Diospyros blancoi (Kamagong) crude leaf extract on Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The leaves including the petiole were collected, air dried, and extracted using an ethanol solvent. Three replicates were made per test oraganism. The Kirby-Bauer method was used in testing the antimicrobial sensitivity of the crude extract to the selected test organisms. Six millimeter filter paper disks were soaked with the crude extract and placed onto the seeded plate. After 24-hrs the results were observed and the mean average zone of inhibition was measured in millimeter. The results yielded 8.66 mm, 5.33 mm, 6.00 mm, and 6.00 mm respectively. The results were compared to the standard Gentamicin in determining the test microorganisms’ sensitivity to the crude extract. The extract showed no antimicrobial effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. However, it had a minimal inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus auerus and Streptococcus pyogenes.
