Abstract

ABSTRACT This study entitled “Lived Experiences of Single Fathers’ Parenting Style and Their Relationship with Their Adolescent Child” aims to identify the lived experiences of single parent family. In this study, we gathered five (5) single fathers and five (5) adolescents that were living in their custody. Family dissolution is disregarded on choosing co-researchers. This study is phenomenological type of study and our co-researchers were interviewed with set of questions regarding their parenting styles and relationship with each other. This study used Baumrind’s prototypical description of parenting styles and Roe’s parent-child relationship as structural description of co-researchers lived experiences. Single parent family does not mean uninvolved relationship. Adolescents and single fathers viewed themselves as practicing authoritative parental rearing. Single parent family could be viewed with warm relationship, as they adjust to their situation with their adolescent; whereas the stage of their adolescent was viewed as relatively independent and self-governing. Single fathers believe that through proper encouragement and reinforcement through personal exploration adolescents will emerge from this stage with a strong sense of self and a feeling of independence and control of their adolescence.
