Abstract

ABSTRACT Title: Cognitive and Socio-emotional functioning of Deaf Children as Perceived by the Parents and Teachers Name of institution: De La Salle University - Dasmarinas Authors: Michael Belmonte, Mark JoseephCusi, Arce DeansonMabalot, Darcie DhaleNato Funding Source: Parents Cost: 10,000 Date Started: June 2011 Date Completed: March 2012 This study determined the Perceive effect of Special Education (SPED) institution on the cognitive and socio-emotional functioning of deaf children in Pasay City. The researchers used Likert Scale Test, validated by one Behavioral Sciences faculty members. Intended to distinguish the performance and developments of the respondents. The respondents of the study are 5 deaf children ranging from seven (7) to fifteen (15) years of age, coming from the SPED institution in Pasay City. The results revealed that the respondents have different strengths and weakness that must be considered in accordance with their levels of cognitive and socio-emotional functioning. On the other hand, respondents have different way in improving and developing their cognitive and socio-emotional functioning. Therefore, it is better that a deaf child will be enrolled in a SPED school so that the teachings of the institution and the way teachers teach will be based on their condition. This study shed light to the readers, school administrators, government, students, parents, and teachers themselves to know the Cognitive and Socio-emotional functioning of children who are deaf.
