Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of the Institution: De La Salle University – Dasmariñas Address: Dasmariñas City, Cavite Title: Intelligence Quotient and Deviance as Predictive Factors for Rule Violating Tendencies of DNHS - Main Students Author: Cruz, Anthony V. Sacmar, Byron C. Funding: Parents Research Cost: Php 2, 000.00 Date Started: August 2010 Date Completed: March 2011 Scope and Coverage: Methodology: This study used a descriptive research design, employing a non-probability sampling specifically the convenience sampling in giving of the survey questionnaire and purposive sampling in selecting the respondents. The study used the Culture Fair Intelligence Test (CFIT), Basic Personality Inventory (BPI) and an interview guide questions as research instruments to gather needed data. De La Salle University – Dasmariñas vi Major Findings: 1. Majority or 70% of the respondents showed an average intelligence quotient, and the average intelligence quotient of all the respondents was 100.4. 2. Majority or 70% of the respondents showed an elevated level of deviance, and the average level of deviance of all the respondents was 60.7. 3. Reasons of the respondents for violating the rules and regulations of the school ranged from having a favorable outcome when not following the rule, frequent association to persons who are more inclined towards deviancy than conformity, and the schools’ control over the deviancy of every individual is weak or lacking. 4. Intelligence quotient is not related to the rule violating tendencies of the respondents for they showed an average IQ and the qualitative data gathered from the interview assured that the respondents know and understand the rules and regulations of the school. However, their deviance level may be factor for majority showed an elevated De La Salle University – Dasmariñas vii deviancy level and their reasons for breaking the rules are linked closely to theories on deviance. Conclusions: The following conclusions are made in light of the above-mentioned findings: 1. The respondents who have the most number of offenses are average in IQ 2. The respondents who have the most number of offenses have an elevated level of deviance. 3. The respondents know and understand the rules and regulations that exist in their school and their reason for violating the rules are linked to theories on deviance. 4. IQ is not related to the rule violating tendencies of the respondents for they scored an average score on the intelligence test and they attest that they know and understand the rules in their school. On the other hand, deviance is a factor for rule violating tendencies for majority of the respondents showed an elevated deviance level and their reasons for violating the rules are closely linked to theories on deviancy. De La Salle University – Dasmariñas viii Recommendations: The following recommendations are given in the light of the study: For future researchers. Future researchers may try to use other sample population, increase the number of respondents and utilize other psychological test. They may also use a different research method to further strengthen the findings of the study. Government Agencies. Utilizing the results of this study, the agencies that are responsible in maintaining the peace and order should spearhead activities that would involve adolescents and would enable them to enhance their skills and talent and would lead them to the right path and divert them from peers who are inclined to deviancy. School Administration. With the results that are showed by this study, the school administration may develop better intervention program to treat their students and may begin to develop a better implementation system of their rules and regulation. Counselors. The school counselors may develop intervention program and organize activities that De La Salle University – Dasmariñas ix would enable them to monitor their students closely and steer them in the right direction to lessen their deviant acts. Students. By knowing themselves more through this study, the students may assess themselves which will lead to them being more sensitive and much more obedient to the schools’ rules and regulations. Parents/ Family. By understanding their members who frequently violate rules through this study, parents should come up with better child rearing plans, with the help of the school and government organizations, which would implant their children with better values, thus strengthening their inner control against deviant acts.
