Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University- Dasmarinas Adress: Bagong Bayan, Dasmarinas City, Cavite Title: Disciplinary Strategies of Single College Mothers in Selected Cavite Areas Authors: Abrahan, Jaya A. Bilgera, Cherry Anne B. Flores, Celestine C. Javier, Sheena Loren R. Funding Source: Parents Cost: 6000php Date Started: June 2011 Date Finished: March 2012 Scope and Limitation: This study was basically concerned with the single mothers and their different disciplinary strategies. The study was limited to the respondent's responses. The ability of the researchers themselves as interviewers and the ability in De La Salle University-Dasmariñas interpreting and analyzing are also considered as limitations. Also considered in the study were single mothers who are currently in a relationship and who are living with their partners but not legally married. The exclusion of other kinds of single mothers was limited into two: the single mothers who are not studying, and those that are below and beyond the age range 18-28 years old. The real names of the participants were not revealed in this study for confidentiality purposes. Methodology: This study aims to identify the different disciplinary strategies of single college mothers. To achieve its aim, the research design, sampling method, research instruments, and the procedure were chosen carefully. In this chapter, the methods of this research are presented. De La Salle University-Dasmariñas Research Design: With the goal of determining the disciplinary strategies of single college mothers, this study used the descriptive interview method to further understand and determine the major factors. Descriptive method is designed for the investigator to gather information about present existing study (Sevilla, et al. 1992). The principal aims in employing this method are to describe the nature of this situation as it exists at the time of the study and to explore the causes of particular phenomena (Travers, 1978). Interviewing is an essential part of most types of research. Research interviews require a very systematic approach to data collection which allows you to maximize the chances of maintaining objectivity and achieving valid and reliable results (Breakwell, 2000). The personal interview allows greater flexibility in asking questions than does the mail survey. In a personal interview, the respondent can obtain clarification when questions are unclear and the trained interviewer can follow up incomplete or ambiguous answers to open ended questions (Shaughnessy & Zechmeister, 2006). De La Salle University-Dasmariñas Findings: 1. Eight or 80% of the respondents of the study were within the age range of 18-23 years old, specifically, three of them are 21 years of age, one of them is 18 years of age and the rest are ages 19, 20, 22 and 23. Two or 20% of the respondents are 28 years old. 2. For their location, seven or 70% of the respondents are residents of Dasmariñas City and only three or 30% came from Imus, Cavite. 3. 80% of the respondents have their parents and relatives as their source of financial support. One depends on her parents and the father of the child, and the other 10% depends on her parents and herself 4. 70% of the single mothers have been single for 1-2 years, and 30% have been single for more than 3 years, specifically, two have been single for 4 years and one has been single for 6 years. 5. Based on the answers of the respondents, verbal instructions, extinction or planned De La Salle University-Dasmariñas ignoring, modeling, and spanking were used as disciplinary tools by the respondents. Conclusions Listed below are the following conclusions: 1. Most of the respondents are in the late adolescence and early adulthood stages which means that they are still in the process of finding oneself and they tend to prioritize their social life/love life more than their responsibilities as students. 2. Since the City of Dasmariñas has more universities than any other parts of Cavite, the researchers had the most access to respondents who reside here. 3. The respondents are students themselves and they can‘t afford to support their child‘s needs, and for that matter, they depend on their parents and relatives for financial support. 4. Most of the respondents have been single for so many years, which indicate that De La Salle University-Dasmariñas single college mothers may have difficulty in regaining and establishing social interactions with the opposite sex after ending a relationship. 5. Verbal instructions nowadays are more common than any other form of discipline or punishment such as spanking. Also, extinction of planned ignoring comes in close second. Recommendations : The recommendations of the study are the following: To Parents/Guardians. That verbal instructions may be more of an effective tool in disciplining children rather than any kind of punishment, and children appreciate communication in order for them to elicit proper behaviors. To Students. That instead of being totally dependent on their parents and relatives, and also friends or people who they consider as influential to them, it is also important if they De La Salle University-Dasmariñas find alternative ways to support their child altogether by means of looking for part-time jobs for them to realize how important and hard it is to be a parent. To Teachers. They are the ones who should help the parents of their students to explain the difficulties and possible repercussions of being a single mother, thus, provide actions through establishing programs and forums that give emphasis to the challenges and difficulties of parenting. To Future Researchers. The researchers suggest that aside from qualitative research, a quantitative method on this study may be done in order to elicit better and more intensive results. Disciplinary strategies of single college fathers may also be done.
