Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University- Dasmariñas Address: City of Dasmariñas Title: Motivation in the Pursuit of Survival among Cancer Patients: A Mixed Method Approach Proponents: Lopez, May Anne I. Millar, Bernadette V. Peralta, Mary Gilianne R. Ribo, Sheela Marie M. Funding Source: Parents Cost: Php 15, 000 Date Started: June 2011 Date Submitted: March 2012 The general objective of this study was to find out the motivations (intrinsic and extrinsic) and motivation level of the cancer patients. This study used the mixed method approach. Ten cancer patients undergoing treatment, aged from thirty to sixty, were chosen through purposive sampling, interviewed and given the Motivation Scale. Based on the interview, the intrinsic motivation of the cancer patients included optimism, faith, self-determination, acceptance, self-generated goal, and personal challenge or combination of some; while extrinsic motivation were family, inspirational stories from cancer survivors and friends, or combination of some. Intrinsic motivation level was higher in most of the participants than their extrinsic motivation level. Generally, the participants had very high motivational level which means that they were really eager to survive and pursue living, supporting the Human Motivation Theory of Abraham Maslow.
