Abstract

GENERAL Find out the perceptions of grade school teachers on the inclusion of Sex Education in the Basic Education Curriculum. B. SPECIFIC 1. Determine the profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender, educational attainment, religion and years of service. 2. Find out the perception of the respondents on the inclusion of Sex Education in the Basic Education Curriculum. 3 SCOPE AND COVERAGE: This study is conducted in Las Piñas Elementary School Central, there where 28 grade school teachers who served as respondents. Their perceptions on the inclusion of sex education in the basic education curriculum are determined. METHODOLOGY: The study make use of the descriptive method of research. The research instrument is a self-made questionnaire validated by selected professors, which is answered by 28 grade school teachers from Las Piñas Elementary School Central during the school year 2010-2011. The weighted mean, frequency distribution and percentage are used to treat the gathered data. MAJOR FINDINGS: 1. When the respondents are identified according to age, majority of the respondents fall into the age brackets of 40-49 with the frequency of 7 and the percentage of 25 followed closely by those who fall into the age brackets of 20-29, 30-39 and 60-65 years wherein each has a percentage of 21.43 and a frequency of 6. The smallest portion of the respondents belongs to the age brackets of 50-59 years of age which has a frequency of 3 and percentage of 10.71. As to their educational attainment, the majority of the respondents are Bachelor‘s degree holders. 25 or 89.29 % attained a Bachelor‘s degree, 2 or 7.14 % 4 attained a Master‘s degree, 0 or 0.00 % attained a Doctorate degree, and 1 or 3.57 % did not respond to the item. As to their gender, female teachers greatly outnumber the male teachers. Out of 28 respondents, 21 or 75 % are female while 7 or 25 % are male. When it comes to religion or religious affiliation, 20 or 71.43 % are Catholics, 3 or 10.71 % are non-Catholic and 5 or 17.86 % did not respond to the item. When grouped according to the years of service, the majority of the population has served the teaching profession for 1-10 years with a frequency of 11 or 39.29 % followed closely by those who have served for 21-30 years of service in teaching with the frequency of 9 or 32.14 %. 6 or 21.43 % have 11-20 years of service to teaching. The smallest portion with a frequency of 2 or 7.14 % has 31 or more years of teaching experience. 2. Under objectives, respondents strongly agree on 2 items and agree on 8 items. They are neutral on one item. The item that ranks high is item number 2.3, HIV-AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Under contents of sex education program, respondents strongly agree on 3 items and agree on 13 items. The item that ranks high was item number 4.7, Taking care of oneself. Under perceptions regarding the sex education program, respondents strongly agree on 1 item and agree on 13 items. They disagree on 2 items. The item that ranks 5 high was item number 7, Teachers/Parents/Guidance counselors must know how to answer questions on sex and gender. The overall mean of 4.19 shows that the respondents agree on the inclusion of sex education in the basic education curriculum. CONCLUSIONS: 1. The profile of the respondents is quite varied. The largest portion of the respondents is age 40-49. The majority of the teaching staff has attained only a Bachelor‘s degree. Female teachers greatly outnumber the male teachers. When it comes to religion, 20 out of 28 respondents are Catholics . Majority of the respondents has served 1-10 years in teaching. 2. Most of the respondents agree on the inclusion of sex education in the basic education curriculum. RECOMMENDATIONS: 1. Based on the perception of teachers, sex education should not start in preschool. It should start at grade 4. 2. DepEd and the DOH should consult first the parents before fully implementing the sex education program. 3. Teachers, parents and guidance counselors must know how to answer questions on sex and gender.
