Abstract

Funding Source : Parents Cost : Php 4,000.00 Date Started : June 2010 Date Finished : March 2011 Scope and Coverage : This study sought to determine the negative effects among left behind daughters on the return of their OFW fathers. In order to obtain a comprehensive data, descriptive survey method was used. Data was acquired through a self-made survey questionnaire with daughters of OFW. Results demonstrated that there were specific statements on the behaviors of the respondents when it comes to feelings, interaction and thinking that occur during the return of their fathers at home. i Methodology : The study used the Purposive Sampling in selecting the participants and has employed the Descriptive Survey Research Design. The information gathered from the transcription of data during the survey was analyzed using Tally and recorded the answered survey form. Frequency count and percentage were used. Major Findings: A. Feelings Most of the respondents showed different answers to the survey that gave them negative feelings on the return of their OFW fathers. In the survey, they revealed that they never felt abandoned unlike other daughters who felt the way although their fathers are already at home. The feelings of running away from home and being useless are sometimes felt by the some of daughter. It also revealed that the daughters’ believe that they are often not given enough attention and the sense of being afraid of or frightened by their own fathers. And they always felt confused, rejected and again, afraid of their father which also gave the “often” as a result. B. Interaction i Most of the respondents answered that they have never encountered being uncomfortable or felt shy of calling their father as dad, papa or tatay. The survey also revealed daughters who sometimes cannot look directly to their father, which is a sign of not getting used to interact personally with him. The survey also discovered that daughters’ often have difficulties in interacting with other members of the family while their father is around, that is why the closeness is lessened. Daughters often cannot defend themselves even though she knows her right as a daughter and cannot watch TV together with their father. When it comes to the description of “always”, the survey indicated that daughters cannot make a long conversation with father, cannot make initial rapport with their father and always find it hard to ask him for a favor. C. Thinking Most of the respondents indicated thinking about their father’s presence has never made them uncomfortable, sometimes thinking about her father is not approachable, often thinking about that it is easier if her father is not an OFW, and that she cannot do what she wants to do freely. The survey also resulted to the description of “always”, daughters have same thinking that it is “always” easier if their father is not an OFW, similar to the result in the description of “often”. It has also found out of daughters’ thinking regarding their father will always just focus on their mistakes, not on their achievements and the thinking that their father must already go back abroad. Conclusions: Based on the findings, the researchers concluded that the following data seems to prove that: 1. There are more daughters who are always confused about their task at home, feel rejected and afraid to their OFW Father. They likely have the emotional insecurity that needs affection from the family especially the father. Usually, the intact with father is much more difficult to show. In addition, it lacks of personal relationship given that they were in the same roof. Daughters always seem to be difficult on lending a conversation, as well as they cannot make an initial act of approaching him and lessened the attachment with other family members. They always have thoughts that their father will not appreciate their deeds, and just focus on their mistakes. Moreover, they come up with a thought of their father’s going back abroad. However, They also think that it is easier for them if their father was not an OFW. 2. Distance is one main factor affecting the negative effect of interaction that dwells between a father who is an Overseas Filipino Worker and daughter which is the main subject of the research. 3. Dealing with a loved one is not easy especially because of being away for a long period of time, and a daughter started to make an awkward relation with her father. Recommendations: The researchers recommend the following: OFW’s daughter. It is recommended for them to have relationship counseling, wherein the counselor works to find out what those negative behavior patterns are, how they developed, and how they can be corrected. This will help them develop a healthy relationship with their fathers and be open-minded about their fathers’ absence. The mother or any respective guardian should remind the child of her responsibility to honor her father despite the distance built by being away from home because of work. Fathers. They should engage at least in simple conversations with all the members of the family, most especially with his daughter who is aloof to him. Being away physically or not, it is suggested that they need to have a personal contact with daughters and maintain a father-figure aura which could be seen in their acts at home. It should include a loving father who approaches his daughter and show his fatherly love. This all make them realize not to be awkward with him. Future Researchers. They should make a background study concerning OFW stories especially fathers to make a more comprehensive outline regarding their life inside and outside the country. It will help them recognize true-to-life happenings of being away from their loved ones. Group of Family. It is recommended for any group of families to have more bonding times together during the father’s vacation, like family outing, and altogether, attending church service every Sunday. And Family counseling is also recommended, if there is major misunderstandings that happened, and make it resolved through the said counseling before it result to worse situations. Other members of the family. It is suggested that they should have a family counseling. This will help the family to reflect on better ways of communicating with each other. Also, they must have to be supporting towards the father-daughter relationship that has a conflict, by helping both of them to develop a new bond and start building an optimistic rapport which can lead them to connect with each other to avoid awkward feelings. Parents. It is advised for them to have a parenting counseling if they are having a hard time disciplining their children. This will help them change their children’s behavior, and realize their magnificent potential as parents. They should be aware of their role and responsibilities for their children and must be encouraged to maintain affectional bond which leads to a happy family environment.
