Abstract

This study focused on the extraordinary experiences of the Spirit Questors with regards to the level of their affect, cognitive and behavior. This research deals with five (5) members of the Spirit Questors which is officially registered under the Securities and Exchange Commission of the Philippines. This study also deals with the respondents’ demographic profile in terms of their age, sex, occupation, educational attainment, religion, no. of years as a member of the group and their psychic abilities. Methodology: This study is a qualitative research using a phenomenological approach. Qualitative research is used to study phenomena that are contextual, meaning they cannot be understood without the context in which they appear. Qualitative research also focuses on personal narratives, self-reports, and expressions of memories, feelings, ideas and thoughts. It is used to fully discover and understand the meaning of the participant’s experiences by means of extracting meaningful common themes that will be supported by the actual narratives cited by the research participants (Myers & Hansen, 2006). Major Findings: 1. The demographic profile of the Spirit Questors with regards to their age, sex, occupation, educational attainment, religion, and psychic abilities does not affect their extraordinary experiences during their quest. 2. The Spirit Questors had various extraordinary experiences in their paranormal activities such as seeing, hearing and feeling supernatural manifestations. Moreover, they even encountered an angry and aggressive spirits or elementals, they also handled murder cases. 2.a. Affect The respondents felt different kinds of emotions such as sadness, grief and pain because of the attachment they have with the spirits during a specific quest. The feeling of fear and even the negative emotions that the respondents had experienced depends on the quest or case they handled. They put aside their own emotions or baggages for them to be able to connect with the spirit's feelings. Their personal matters or problems may greatly affect the outcome of their quest. Lastly, all of the respondents felt the sense of fulfillment, happiness and the urgency of helping people. 2.b. Cognitive In the cognitive level, the respondents prepare themselves specially their state of mind, way of thinking and how the way they use their logic. Additionally, the spirit questors are mentally ready, to have a clear thought or mind in making a decision on how they react in a certain issue during a quest. Their state of mind depends on the role they play in a quest. Moreover, their thought varies depending on the case that they handle. 2.c. Behavior The Spirit Questors have different rituals during their quest. When it comes to their behavior they usually scan, hold hands and form a circle, communicate or talk with the human and non-human entities to fully understand the situation and for them to be able to solve the issue. Furthermore, they experienced different physical reactions such as having a heavy feeling, tiredness, crying and loss of energy. Conclusions: 1. Regardless of the differences of their age, sex, occupation, educational attainment, religion, years of membership and psychic abilities, they still experience extraordinary phenomena during their spirit questing. 2. The researchers concluded that the respondents’ level of affect, cognitive and behavior depends on the case that they handle. In the level of the respondents’ affect, their emotions or feelings depends on their attachment with the spirit or elemental involve. On the other hand, their cognitive level primarily concentrates on having a clear state of mind while retaining their logic. Lastly, their behavior were anchored to the rituals or practices of their group (Spirit Questors) and their physical reactions varies on what they feel. Recommendations: Spirit Questors. To continually use their abilities in serving the people who are in need. Moreover, they should further understand and study the nature of their quest in terms of their affect, cognitive and behavior for the development of their abilities as an individual. Parapsychologists. To further study the paranormal phenomenon and enrich the knowledge of individuals in its occurrence. Moreover, to give a scientific basis in explaining the behaviors with regards to the paranormal activities of Spirit Questors or even other paranormal groups. Individuals with Psychic Abilities. They must further develop their abilities and use it for the social and spiritual needs of the society. Furthermore, to seek explanations and related studies that would enrich their knowledge regarding ones affect, cognitive and behavioral changes that they encounter. Future Researchers. To extract more ideas and to have a deeper understanding on paranormal phenomena and to mainly discuss about the nature and existence of the Spirit Questors. They could also broaden this study by considering other topics related to the group such as the different instruments used in spirit questing, a detailed discussion about their rituals and practices.
