Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to present the personality profile and fraternity involvement of selected students of De La Salle University-Dasmariñas. Specifically, it aimed to present the demographic profile of the selected fraternity members in De La Salle University-Dasmariñas. The reasons why these students joined fraternities were also among the concerns of this study. In addition, the perceptions of the selected fraternity members as regards the benefits and negative consequences of being a member of the fraternity were also identified. Moreover, an assessment of the personality profile of the selected fraternity members was a vital factor in this study. Finally, this study also tried to establish the extent of involvement of the selected members in the activities of their fraternity. This study was designed using the descriptive method, specifically case study, in the discussion of the data gathered. To obtain the desired results, the Sixteen Personality Factor questionnaire developed by Dr. Raymond Cattell served as the major instrument. Additionally, a focus group discussion was conducted to gather relevant information as to the reasons, perceptions, as well as the extent of involvement of the respondent fraternity members. Results showed that some students of De La Salle University-Dasmariñas who are enrolled in different levels from the colleges of the university are active members of the fraternity. Some members of the fraternity preferred using aliases to conceal their true identity to protect themselves from possible course of discipline from the university. Most of them joined the fraternity because they seek attention v and guidance from their family although some of them had different reasons. It was also learned that fraternity members enjoy the company of their “brods” as they find comfort and brotherly love in them. Consequently, some college students join fraternity because of different human needs, such as sense of identity, recognition, love, power and relatedness. Moreover, fraternity members get more benefits than negative consequences from being members of the fraternity. Results also showed that the Personality Profile of the respondents revealed that some of them need socialization to improve themselves while others possess favorable qualities that would help them succeed in life. Thus, they are more involved in the In-Group activities than in the Out-Group; yet, they are also active in the community Outreach programs. Finally, results confirmed that fraternity members adhere to their principle of “the act of one is the act of all”; hence, in some instances some fraternities and their members get involved in some troubles because of rivalry among the groups and as a result of what they call “hits”. The highlights of the researchers’ recommendations are for those who would like to join a fraternity. They should live up to the good ideals of the group and that good judgment must be observed at all times. Also, fraternity members must avoid getting into rivalry or competition with other fraternities and must totally and ultimately shun the practice of “hits”. Lastly and the most important, family members, especially the parents— must show love and concern to each other so that they will not be looking for other people who could show them love and care.
