Abstract

This study aimed to know the socio- emotional needs and the perception towards the future of the sexually abused adolescents in Vedruna Institution. Specifically: 1. To know better the demographic profiles of the sexually-abused adolescents in Vedruna Institution. 2. To be able to know the common needs of the sexually abused adolescents through checklist questionnaire with regards to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs specifically love and belongingness 3. To be able to specify the needs of the sexually abused adolescents and how will affect their concept regarding their future. SCOPE AND LIMITATION: The researchers chose Vedruna Institution in Tagaytay and selected nine (9) respondents who possess this characteristic. They are (aged 9 to 17 year old). The study was limited to analyzing the socioemotional needs of the nine sexually-abused female adolescents at Vedruna Institution in Tagaytay their perception towards the future if there’s a change regarding their current situation. The said socioemotional needs were measured by engaging the participants in one on one interview and by asking them to answer questionnaires to assess the needs of the adolescents in the said institution. METHODOLOGY: Research Procedures In the actual gathering process the researchers did the following: 1. Sought the help of the social worker in choosing the participants of this study. 2. Used sampling method to get participants for this study. 3. Followed these characteristics is the selection of respondents: a) The respondents were sexually abused regardless of the type of sexual abused; b) The respondent’s age fall within the range of 9 to 17 years. With these characteristics, the researchers with the help of the social worker selected 9 respondents. Research Instrument: The researchers use the following research tools: one on one interview and; checklist questionnaires that could help the researchers to attain the socio-emotional needs of the participants. We believed that these instruments were right enough to know better the needs of the sexually abused. Aside from the interview the researchers interviewed one of the social workers and the resident psychologist of Vedruna institution, for further information about the participants. CONCLUSION: 1. Female adolescents who were sexually abused are more likely to seek for love and sense of belongingness especially from their parents, and self-acceptance from themselves. 2. Majority of the sexually abused female adolescents feel guilty of not being able to take care of themselves, the reason why they cannot fully accept their past and have always been clinging to their bad memories as they grow up. 3. Most sexually abused female adolescents fell that they were accepted in the society due to the support coming from their peers and the institutions protecting them. It is however sad to know, based on the cases studied, that they feel more accepted with their said peers and friends than with their families. 4. Majority of the sexually abused female adolescents still see themselves as people worthy of a good future. The tragedy that happened to them most likely triggered their desire to dream more. 5. Most of the sexually-abused adolescents wanted to fulfill their selfworth by helping other people in the future. Dreaming to be a lawyer, a soldier or a nun is what they believe to be the first step to accomplish it. They are most likely to feel scared that other people would experience the same fate that they experienced, so they vow to protect and help them. RECOMMENDATION 1. The female adolescents, especially the victims of sexual abuse, should engage themselves in youth-oriented group activities for further social and emotional foundation. 2. The researchers also recommend that the institution need to conduct an intervention program to the sexually abused adolescents in order for them to fully realize their current situation and to recover fully. They need a program that should fit their socio-emotional needs. 3. Children who have been neglected and abandoned should be given enough attention and care by the people inside the institution and should be given time to interact with their peers and friends. 4. Believing that family is the basic unit of the society, the researchers recommend to have an activity about the importance of family inside the institution and to give the children chance to spend time with their families. 5. The future researchers can conduct a similar study with a bigger population.
