Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University-Dasmarinas Address: Dasmarinas, Cavite Title: The Quality of Attachment of Foster Children Towards their foster Parents. Authors: Krizta Beth G. Saradpon Funding source: Parents Part time jobs Cost: 25,000 php Date started: July 2008 Date ended: May 2009 Objectives of the study To identify the different qualities of attachment of foster children towards their foster parents under the Home of Joy Orphanage Foster care program. Statement of the Problem This study sought information about the quality of attachment of foster children to their foster parents. Moreover, the following queries were investigated: 1. What are the characteristics of the foster children in terms of their: 1.1. Age 1.2. Gender 1.3. History in the orphanage 2. What is the profile of the foster parent, it includes: 2.1. Age 2.2. Educational Attainment 2.3. Marital Status 2.4. No. of children 2.5. Economic Status 3 2.6. Religion 2.7. Length of service as foster parent 2.8. Reason/s in volunteering to be foster parents to the children? 3. What is the quality of attachment of the foster children to their foster parent as revealed in the Attachment Story Completion Task, Picture Response Exercise and Film Viewing Exercise? Scope and Delimitation This study tackled and explored the attachment aspect of institutionalized foster children to their foster parents. In line with this, the researchers discussed and defined the quality of attachment present in the children and how this behavior is expressed to their foster parents. Meanwhile, this study focused only on the foster family care program of the Christian Growth Ministries – Home of Joy Orphanage. Three respondents were interviewed because at the time of collecting data, the CGM-HOJ Orphanage was the best accessible institution and there were three children aged 3-5 years old who are under the foster family care program fitted for the study. 4 METHODOLOGY This study applied the descriptive-case study method. A case study is primarily descriptive. It obtains measurements and analyses thru surveying, interviewing, and observing. The latter requires span of time, and gives validation to the other two aforementioned. This design is used for studies requiring data from limited resources or respondents. Although of little coverage, it becomes thorough through applying a series of testing or data gathering – which is the observation process. Tools for this design include questionnaire for surveys, interview guide, and along with techie gadgets such as voice recorders, cameras, and video recorders for additional bases of the study (McQueen, 1999). This study used interviewing and observation with the foster parents. The children aged 3-5 years from Christian Growth Ministries – Home of Joy Orphanage was the target respondents. Only three (3) children where interviewed for this case study. For the reason that these three (3) were the only available children allowed as our respondents by the social worker of the Foster Care Program. Findings: 1. The foster parents wanted to share their blessings to other people, and they chose to help abandoned and neglected children who need parental love and a temporary or permanent home at the same time foster parents longed to have kids while and wanted their biological child to have a playmate. 2. Sakuragi answered all 0 (securely attached) in the 3 instruments: MASCT, Picture 5 Response Technique and Film Viewing. 3. Dora was mostly under ambivalent attachment, having been consistent in the Picture Response Technique. 4. Casper was consistent in the Picture Response Technique, but under insecure attachment. Conclusion In relation to the above findings, the researchers concluded that the quality of attachment was based on the foster children’s biological background and experiences and their length of stay in the foster care program. Foster children have a big chance of developing secure attachment towards the foster parent as their stay in the foster care program lengthens. Children with traumatic or stressful experiences can also develop secure attachment but in a longer period of time. They should be given enough attention, care and love to surpass their previous experiences. The researchers learned that they are lucky enough to have their parents beside them and they were able to be given good health and education. The researchers also learned that foster children are likewise still lucky for they were given individuals who took them as their own even for a short period of time. Recommendations Based on the findings, the researchers recommend the following: 1. To make this study more extensive about attachment, future researchers should determine the attachment of the foster child individually with his parents. 2. To improve this study in pushing through the approval of the proposed senate bill which aims to provide funds for the Philippine foster care program. 3. To make the study more reliable, future researchers can make use of more respondents.
