Tan, Myra P. Titco, Maria Trixy S. Adviser: Mrs. Virginia Sanfilip Degree: Bachelor of Arts Major in Psychology Date Started: June 2008 Date of Completion: March 2009 Total Expenses: Php 10,000.00 Source of fund: Parents and relatives Objectives of the Study: A. General This research aimed to describe the problems encountered by gays inside Manila City Jail and their coping mechanisms. B. Specific The study sought to answer the following problems: 11 1. What is the profile of gay prisoners in Manila City Jail as regards their: 1.1 age 1.2 educational attainment 1.3 previous employment 1.4 previous estimated income 1.5 crime committed, and 1.6 length of stay inside prison? 2. What are the problems that gay prisoners experience inside the prison with regard to the following: 2.1 correctional facilities 2.2 health problems 2.3 social relationships, and 2.4 emotionality? 3. What are the coping mechanisms used by gay inmates to address their problems? 4. What are the respondents’ coping mechanisms with regard to: 4.1 emotion-focused coping strategies and 4.2 problem-focused coping? Scope and Limitation The study focused on the problems encountered by gay inmates with regard to the correctional facilities, health problems, social 12 relationship and their emotionality. Also, the researchers focused on how male homosexual offenders managed these problems and what coping techniques they used in order to survive as detainee. Methodology The researchers used descriptive type of research as the method of the study. Nine respondents were selected in a convenient manner as the research participants of the study. The researchers were able to get the needed data through the use of observation, interview and self-made test. To measure the respondents, answers to the test, the researchers used general weighted mean. Major findings 1. Correctional facilities and social relationship are the problems experienced mostly by gays inside Manila City jail. 2. Among the nine respondents, almost all of the gay inmates used emotion-focused coping in order to overcome their problems. 3. Prayer, and talking and sharing to friends are the common coping mechanisms of the gay inmates. Conclusions: Based on the careful analysis of the gathered data the following conclusions were formulated: 13 1. Seven out of nine of the respondents committed the same crime which is the possession of illegal drugs. 2. Most of the respondents belong to lower socio-economic class. This evidence suggests that members who lack economic support, find their ways in to criminal activity in order to survive. 3. Living inside the jail is not easy. Aside from the deprivation of the inmate’s freedom they are also deprived of their needs inside the institution, mostly food and medical services. 4. The condition inside the jail affects the inmates’ behavior particularly their social relationship. 5. Correctional facilities and social relationship are dominant problems of the gay inmates inside Manila City Jail. 6. Overcrowding condition is the most common problem of gay inmates with regard to correctional facilities. 7. With so many restrictions and little way to cope with their problems, the respondents are forced to become resourceful inside the jail in order to solve their problems specifically their basic needs inside the jail such as offering some services to the staff and to their co-inmates. 8. The most common form of coping mechanism used by the gay inmates involves spiritual activities such as praying. They tend to reach out to God because they can no longer reach out to 14 anyone else. Sharing and talking with co-inmates got the highest frequency. 9. Gay inmates utilized majority of coping mechanisms, mostly emotion-focused over problem-focused. Recommendations The researchers formulated the following recommendations for respective groups of people: 1. Prison Administrator. The prison administrator should develop a program on the social relationship of inmates. 2. Prison Staff. They must implement an activity not only daily chores but an activity that will overcome the depression and stress and lessen the burden of the respondent, and a good relationship that will make the inmates feel secure and not to be scared. 3. Government. Lack of funds for the detainee must give attention by the government to ensure their needs and safety. 4. Respondents. They should know the different kinds of coping mechanism for them to be able to surpass their problem inside the institutions. 5. Family/ Support System. They should visit their loved ones as often as possible to lessen the stress. 6. Young Generation. They should be aware of the reality of what is 15 happening in the country especially inside prison. They should think of their action in life, that doing crime is not an answer to a problem and should see how difficult it is being imprisoned. 7. Future Researchers. They should conduct the same study with bigger population.
