Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University – Dasmariñas Address: Dasmariñas, Cavite Title: Perceived Social Acceptance of Lesbians in the Workplace Author: Ma. Angela S. San Jose Finding source: Parents Cost: P8, 000 Date started: June 2008 Date ended: October 2008 Objective of the study: The objective of the study is to contribute information and understanding about employed lesbians. Scope and coverage: This study determined the experiences of lesbians in the workplace through the use of dimensions; specifically, Acceptance, Discrimination, and Coping strategies. This study focused mainly on lesbians, employed in any company regardless of age. The total number of respondents the researcher selected is 6 because of the limited time to gather data. ii Major findings: Based on the gathered data, there is an increased social acceptance of lesbians in the workplace because their co-workers are open about their sexuality and they respect them for who and what they are. There is a decreased occurrence of discrimination they received because the skills of a person, one’s contribution to the company, and not one’s sexuality is vital in the workplace. Also, the respondents have different coping strategies that are effective to face problems in their daily lives, and since the Philippines has a religious culture, most of the respondents lift their concerns and worries to God. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, it could be concluded that majority of the employed lesbians are college graduates. Their age ranges from 21 to 29 years old. More than half of them are in the corporate world while the rest are employed in a school and a coffee shop. They are working with their current employer for not less than three months. Most of them are in the current position since they started working in their present employers. There is an increasing social acceptance of lesbians in the workplace because employers observed how effective and productive lesbians are regardless of their sexuality. Because of the increased social acceptance of lesbians in the workplace, there is a decreasing number of discrimination iii among them. They earn respect from their co-workers because of their attitude towards work. Because of culture, most of them are likely to seek understanding and peace in the loving arms of God. Recommendation: Based on the summary and conclusion, the researcher proposes the following recommendations for heterosexual people, lesbians, parents and family, and researchers. 1. Heterosexual people must be sensitive of the feelings of homosexuals and must learn how to treat every individual fairly regardless of their sexual orientation. 2. Lesbians should understand that it is important to value one’s self even if selves whether the people around them do not see their positive traits. What matters is that they know how to improve them selves and contribute to their company. 3. Parents must understand and be very supportive if their child is a gay or a lesbian because these people are in need of their parent’s support. 4. Future researchers must conduct a broader related study for the benefit of the general public.
