Abstract

ABSTRACT NAME OF INSTITUTION: De La Salle University-Dasmariñas ADRESS: Dasmariñas Bagong Bayan, Dasmariñas, Cavite TITLE: Implication of Religious Beliefs, Rituals and Experiences to Social Relations among Members of Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios in Mt. Banahaw AUTHOR: Kristyll E. Salen FUNDING SOURCE: Parents COST: 10,000 Php DATE STARTED: July 2006 DATE COMPLETED: February 2007 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY: General: This study aims to determine the religious beliefs, rituals and experiences among members of Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios and its implication to their Social relations. Specific: 1.) What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of: a.) Age, b.) Gender, c.) Educational Attainment, d.) Civil Status, and e.) Occupation 2.) What are the Religious Beliefs of the religious cult? 3.) What are the Religious Rituals of the Religious cult? 4.) Do the members of the religious cult have religious experiences? 5.) Do the members of the religious cult benefit from their social relations in terms of: a.) Attachment b.) Social integration c.) Reassurance of worth d.) Sense of reliable alliance e.) Guidance and f.) Opportunity of nurturance 6.) Do the respondents perceive that their religious belief, rituals and experiences have an implication to their social relations? SCOPE AND DELIMITATION: The study is concern exclusively to the Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios, which is based within the foot of Mt. Banahaw in Sta. Lucia, Dolores Quezon, and there are no respondent that represents members living in other provinces such as Mindoro and Batangas. The respondents for the study, includes fifteen (15) members of the religious, eight females and seven males, age ranges from 20 to 70. This study focuses on the religious belief, ritual and experiences of the members of Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios, and its implication to their social relations with other members of the religious cult. The researcher resides with the members of Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios in Mt. Banahaw for four nights and five days. METHODOLOGY: Taking into account the characteristics of the subject this research would be dealing with and the nature of the study, the researcher opts to utilize the descriptive research design. Specifically using the Katutubong pananaliksik, which is made of pakapa-kapa”, “pagtatanong-tanong”, “pagmamasid”, “pakikipagpalagayang-loob”, and “pakikipanuluyan (Santiago & Enriquez, 1976). The researcher made use purposive sampling method, wherein fifteen (15) participants have been chosen who are male and female members of Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios age ranges from 20-70, the respondents came from the members of the religious cult residing within the compound of Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios in Sta. Lucia, Dolores Quezon. The researcher used triangulation method including observation, interview, and focus group discussion in gathering data and information. A nonstatistical measure such as an objective content analysis has been used to answer the problems in this study. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the analysis done by the researcher, the following conclusions are hereby presented: (a) The profile of the respondents in terms of age, shows that majority of the respondents are in their adulthood stage, which may signify that they are in the right age to value their own beliefs and principles. In terms of their educational attainment, majority of the respondents had reached secondary level, which indicates that they are not illiterate and they have the ability to comprehend. It was also concluded that the greater part of the respondents is still working for the reason that they still have the capacity to work and be able to live a decent life. (b) The Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios have distinct religious beliefs, like their belief to Maria Bernarda Balitaan as the Diyos Ina and Mt. Banahaw as the Holy place, however their foundation of faith has resemblances to Catholicism; therefore the researcher concludes that Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios is an offshoot of Catholicism. (c) Their religious rituals are expression of their religious belief. They have different forms of rituals such as the Pamumuwesto in Mt. Banahaw, and the Araw-araw na Panalangin. However, they also have rituals, which are almost the same as the Catholics, like the concept of Baptism, Wedding, Rituals for the dead, and Blessings. (d) The respondents affirms that they have had religious experiences and these experiences had had strengthened their faith and motivated them to devote their lives to Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios. (e) The members of the Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios socially relate positively to other members of the religious cult. Moreover they benefit from their social relations in terms of attachment, social integration, reassurance of worth, sense of reliable alliance, guidance and opportunity of nurturance. (f) The social relations of the members of the Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios are influenced by their perceived similarity of religious beliefs, rituals and experiences, which enhances their behavior among group members. Because the Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios is very cohesive, the members are influenced by one another and developed responsibilities that contributed much on their social relations. It has been proven through this study that the religious beliefs, rituals, and experiences of the members of the Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios have an implication on their social relations. Therefore, the researcher concludes that the members of Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios have spiritual or intuitive social relations, which is caused by their common spiritual affinity or identification. It is also concluded that the Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios is an offshoot of Catholicism. RECOMMENDATIONS: Based on the strong points and restrictions of the investigation conducted by the researcher, the following are hereby recommended: General public. The Filipinos should exert more effort to know the cults in Mt. Banahaw through researches and studies to avoid prejudices and discriminations. We must be aware of their beliefs and ways of life and see them in a different perspective. There are many other religious cults in Mt. Banahaw, therefore future researches should conduct studies regarding other social aspects of the religious cults in Mt. Banahaw and their intergroup relationships. Filipino Psychologist and students of Philippine Psychology. Since many of the religious cults in Mt. Banahaw are lead by a woman, future researcher may conduct studies about the role of women in religion in Mt. Banahaw. They can also do research about the implications of women spiritual leaders to the selfesteem of male members of the religious cult. Sta. Lucia Community. The Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios should also relate to other religious cults in Mt. Banahaw and make valuable projects that would benefit the whole community of Sta. Lucia. They should also cooperate and support environmental projects to protect the mountain and the environment. Theological researchers. Further studies can conduct other line of investigation concerning the emotional quotient and life-satisfaction of the members of the Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios and other religious cults in Mt. Banahaw. They can also conduct studies regarding other religious cults situated in other provinces such as in Laguna and in Pampangga. Future Researchers. Future researcher should conduct more studies about the Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios in terms of other religious aspects that are not covered by this research. Further studies will help achieve recognition about the existence of Iglesia del Ciudad Mistica de Dios, as well as other religious cults in Mt. Banahaw to avoid misconception and prejudices brought by lack of sufficient information.
