Abstract

ABSTRACT NAME OF INSTITUTION : De La Salle University- Dasmariñas ADDRESS : Bagong Bayan, Dasmariñas, Cavite TITLE : The Motivational and Commitment Level of Public Elementary School Teachers in Selected Rural and Urban Areas in Cavite AUTHORS : Maria Sheena C. Catarroja Cathyrene E. Moreno FUNDING SOURCE : Parents COST : 15,000 DATE STARTED : July 2006 DATE FINISHED : February 2007 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY : General: The primary purpose of the study is to find out if there exist significant relationship on the areas of work and the motivational, and commitment level of teachers. Specific: 1. To determine the demographic profile of teachers in terms of age, gender and educational qualification; 2. To determine the motivational level of the respondents; 3. To determine the commitment level of the respondents; 4. To determine whether there is a significant relationship in the areas of work and the motivational level of the respondents and 5. To determine whether there is a significant relationship in the areas of work and the commitment level of the respondents; Scope and Coverage: The respondents of this study were 41 teachers from the selected rural and urban areas in Cavite. There were 14 teachers from Magallanes Elementary School and 27 teachers from Dasmariñas Elementary School. Methodology: The descriptive correlational method is used to conduct this study. Questionnaires designed by the researchers were used to collect data to determine the motivational and commitment level of teachers in the selected rural and urban areas. In the analysis of data gathered, solving for the frequency distribution, percentage, and Cramer’s V were used to determine the motivational and commitment level of the teachers. Major Findings: As for the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age range, the 41 respondents, majority of the teachers are from 31 to 45 years old. As for the gender, obviously, most of the teachers are females. As for the educational qualification, most of the teachers have already finished master’s degree. As for the motivational level of the respondents, urban teachers have a much higher motivational level than rural teachers. It shows that the urban teachers appeared to be more motivated compared with the rural teachers. As for the commitment level of the respondents, the data shows that comparably urban teachers have a much higher commitment level than rural teachers. Thus, urban teachers appear more committed compared with the rural teachers. There is a moderate relationship between area of work and motivational level of teachers; there is a strong relationship between area of work and commitment level of teachers. Conclusions: The motivational level of the respondents was found to be higher among the urban teachers as compared with the rural teachers. This may be due to how teachers handle and deal with the presenting problems and challenges in the teaching profession. The commitment level of the respondents was found to be higher among the urban teachers as compared with the rural teachers. . This may be due to the teachers’ outlook in the teaching profession and his or her goals, objectives, and priorities. The relationship between the motivational and commitment level of teachers to the areas of work is moderate and the same conclusion was derived between the motivational level of teachers and the areas of work; while there is a strong relationship between commitment level of teachers and the areas of work. This may be due to the involvement of the education itself to the productivity and development of the community. Recommendations: Aspiring researchers must take into consideration that they could add some other factors that are contributory and important to this study like the length of service of the respondents to further have a stronger and reliable results and study. For Government to meet the demands of the teachers, school and students and the educational system as a whole in providing quality education through enhancing the educational program. To have programs for the interaction of both the community and the schools in providing instructions, regulations and policies. To establish good relationship and conducive working environment for the teachers and the students through building a strong foundation in enriching the value of education. To extend the scope of the study to elementary, secondary and college level.
