Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of the Institution: De La Salle University – Dasmariñas Address: Dasmariñas, Cavite Title: Suicide Potential among Selected AB Psychology Students at De La Salle University-Dasmariñas: A Basis for Guidance Intervention Program Proponents: Gizelle M. Ulitin Catherine O. Nolasco Ezra James B. Macario Funding Source: Parents Cost: 8,500.00 Date Started : June 2006 Date Completed: February 2007 Objectives of the Study General Objective: This study is made to identify the level of suicide potential of selected AB Psychology students. Specific Objective: 1. What is the demographic profile of the selected AB Psychology students in terms of: A. Age 5 B. Sex C. Year Level 2. What are the determinants of suicide potential? 3. What is the overall level of suicide potential among selected AB Psychology students as revealed by the Suicide Potential Inventory for Filipinos (SPIF)? 4. Based from problem 2 and 4, what is the appropriate intervention program that would address the needs of the respondents? Scope and Delimitation The primary concern of the study is to provide a demographic profile of selected AB Psychology students, identify the determinants of suicide potential and know their general suicidal potential level through Suicide Potential Inventory for Filipinos (SPIF), a standardized test, as a basis for developing Intervention Program that will cater students with suicidal ideation. The respondents are 40 selected AB Psychology students from first year to fourth year level. Each year level will be composed of 10 students, 5 males and 5 females. The respondents have ages ranging from 16-22. The study aimed to identify the risk factors of suicide potential. Methodology The researchers used random sampling through fishbowl method. The respondents were selected students from the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) of De La Salle University-Dasmariñas particularly from the AB Psychology course. A list of all the names of the students under the said program was processed from the Registrar’s Office. After randomly selecting the names of the respondents, they were approached individually if they could be participant in gathering data for the research. If a selected participant agreed upon the request of the researchers, they were given the schedule of their test and interview. The researchers guaranteed the respondents that the data was treated with strict confidentiality. Major Findings 1. Suicide potential occurs more on the respondents whose age range is 18-20 and has a mean of 18.9. 2. The five determinants measured by the SPIF questionnaire are hopelessness, negative self-evaluation, suicide ideation, helplessness and hostility. The levels for each determinant are very high, high, moderate, low and very low. 3. The determinant that got the highest frequency is suicide ideation. The determinant falls under moderate level and their mean are: 33.50 7 for hopelessness, 43.97 for negative self evaluation, 29.52 suicide ideation, 33.20 for helplessness and 15.1 for hostility. Negative self evaluation got the highest mean and has moderate level. 4. The level of suicide potential of the respondents was in moderate level having a frequency if 31 and percentage of 77.5 with a mean of 149.5. Conclusions Based on the analysis, the following conclusions were drawn. 1. The students Demographic Profile was significant in determining the level of suicide potential among the selected AB Psychology students. 2. Among the five indicators, the selected AB Psychology students have moderate suicidal ideation. 3. The overall level of suicide potential of the respondents falls under moderate level. 4. Negative self-evaluation should be given focus because students have more problems regarding their self-esteem. 5. There is a need for intervention program based on the result of the study. Recommendations For future reference, the following recommendations are listed: 1. Psychology students should have seminar or workshop regarding suicide for them to have a practical understanding on suicide. 2. Students should have opportunities to provide group support including students sharing problems with others to help find solutions can be beneficial. 3. Faculty should provide activity such as film viewing as a trigger for a discussion of effective ways to deal with suicide. 4. Future researchers who will be doing the same study should have more respondents to yield different results. They mat also include religion, birth order, marital status and sexual orientation as variables to determine their role in suicide potential. 5. Researchers should provide test specifically to focus on suicide ideation. Negative self-evaluation is a good topic to be studied. 6. Suicide Potential Inventory for Filipinos (SPIF) is more appropriate to be given to those groups of people who have high risk in committing suicide. 7. Guidance counselor should give the same importance to nonacademic concerns such as issues on suicide.
