Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University- Dasmariñas Address: Dasmariñas, Cavite Title: Psychosocial Profile of Adopted Adolescents and their Coping Behavior Authors: Mary Elizabeth L. Cottam Gerald Albert Flavier Christine Joy B. Olegario Funding Source: Parents Cost: 5, 000 Date Started: June 2008 Date Ended: March 2009 Objectives of the Study General To find out the coping behaviors and the psychosocial profile of the adopted adolescents. To know how the adopted adolescent cope up with every situation of their lives. Specific 1. What is the demographic profile of adopted adolescents according to their: a. age b. gender 2. What is the psychosocial profile of the adopted adolescents along the positive scale of dimension? 3. What is the psychosocial profile of adopted adolescents along the negative scale dimension? 4. What is the psychosocial profile of adopted adolescents along the resolution scale dimension? 5. What is the coping behavior of the adolescent adoptees? Scope and Limitation The scope of the study included the measure of Erikson’s theory of human development, the “Measures of Psychosocial Development”, developmental task, psychosocial crisis, central process for resolving the psychosocial crises and the coping behaviour- the behaviour that people generate to meet the challenge and build the relationships within their lives. The researcher used an instrument in able to measure the psychosocial development of the participant. This study will also cover about five of Erikson’s stages of development which are trust vs. mistrust, Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt , Initiative vs. Guilty , Industry vs. Inferiority, and Identity vs. Identity Confusion. Due to the nature of this research, one of the limitations the researchers bumped into was unable to communicate with the adoptees biological parents due to the request of foster parent’s privacy and to not intervene with the family matters. Methodology This study is a descriptive research as its research methodology. Descriptive research may be more analytic and aims to gather data without manipulation of the research context. In order for the researchers to get participants, we use snow ball technique to access to sufficient participants with the distinctiveness the researchers are seeking. This paper is basically a Descriptive Design. Descriptive Designs are used to demonstrate a relationship, predict behaviors and describe a behavior or participant. (Heliman, G.1999) The researchers used the descriptive design to foresee the given behavior which an adopted adolescent can express within the household and within the family he or she is living with. Another reason is to know how he or she interacts and socializes towards the people surrounding him or her. Communication is another factor that can help in our study. The researchers may identify any problem towards these individuals. Specifically, we hypothesized the behavior of an adopted adolescent, relating their basic psychosocial development. It seeks to explore the basic social and occupational identities of an adopted adolescent. Findings 1. The demographic profile of the participants in terms of age ranges 12-19 years old. 2. The demographic profile of the respondents in terms of gender shows that there are seventeen or 57% were female and thirteen or 43% were male. Female adopted adolescents were more dominant than male. 3. The respondents were subjected to an instrument entitled “Measures of Psychosocial Development” to determine which stages of development mostly affected of being adopted. Also the researcher-made questionnaires were also administered; specifically it aimed to answer the psychosocial crises and the coping behavior of an adopted adolescent. 4. Majority of the respondents high score on negative scales was Inferiority, on positive scales was Identity and on resolution scales were Initiative vs. Guilt, Identity vs. Identity Confusion and Autonomy vs. Shame & Doubt. Conclusion A procedure of taking the instrument about Human Development was done in relating to the Psychosocial Profile of Adopted Adolescence. The results of the study were the different stages of development which the respondents are affected during their development since birth, from infancy to adolescence. With the study, the researchers knew the conflict at each stage of development. Each conflict is present in some form throughout life, but reaches a critical period at its specific stage. Adoption brings with it certain core issues. As adopted children grow into adolescent, they carry their thoughts and feelings about being adopted with them. Adolescent adoptees may have no, some, or great difficulty dealing with these thoughts and feelings. Some will struggle with the added dynamic that adoption brings to their life, and for others there will be little or no struggle. We hope this factsheet has been helpful in at least pointing out to adolescent adoptees that they are not alone. Recommendations Considering the above conclusion derived from the major findings, the researchers recommend the following measures that can help adoptees, foster parents and researchers and other individuals inclined to the same field. Adoptees, they should be more open-minded towards situations they have already been through. Do not be rebellious and learn to forgive. Accept the fact that they are adoptee. They should love their family who adopted them. They should understand their biological parents for they only wanted the adoptees to have a good life. And most of all keep moving forward. Foster Parents, they should love their adopted child deeply and unconditionally and they must let their adopted child feel that they do belong in the family. They should also be open-minded towards the situation they already been through. Researchers, they should conduct more studies relating to this study like the relationship between the adopted child and the adoptive parents. Or maybe the study about the adaptive parents on how they cope with the situation.
