Abstract

ABSTRACT NAME OF THE INSTITUTION: De La Salle University- Dasmariñas ADDRESS: Dasmariñas, Cavite TITLE: The Deaf Adolescents’ Perception on Sexual Risk- Taking Behaviors AUTHORS: Hufano, Maricar Micah L. Malabanan, Leilani C. Mariano, Bonna Merry M. FUNDING SOURCE: Parents Cost: P 10,000.00 DATE STARTED: June 2008 DATE COMPLETED: March 2009 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY A.) GENERAL To know the perception of the deaf adolescents on sexual risk- taking behaviors. B.) SPECIFIC 1. To know the demographic profiles of the respondents in terms of the following: a. Age b. Gender c. Duration of deafness 2. To know the respondents’ level of sexual risk-taking behaviors 3. To know the respondents’ perception on sexual risk-taking behaviors 4. To know if there is a significant relationship between the level and perception of sexual risk-taking behaviors. SCOPE AND LIMITATION The respondents of the study are 48 deaf adolescent students with age ranging from 13-21 years old. The respondents came from the Philippine School for the Deaf at Harrison St., Pasay City. This deaf school is a public institution. The respondents are composed of male and female deaf adolescents. The research is mainly focused and limited on discussing the perception and level of the respondents’ sexual risk taking behaviors and the relationship between the level and perception on sexual risk taking behaviors. The researchers admit that there was specific weakness on the proposed study in which the researchers had very minimal responses from the respondents. Interview was very then inconvenient for the researcher and they needed help from the interpreters. Interpreters were the one who instructed the respondents for them to be able to answer the questionnaire. RESEARCH PROCEDURE The procedure was strictly followed in order for the researchers to attain the information and data in the study. 1. The researchers constructed the survey questionnaires for the respondents. 2. The researchers chose three professors from the Behavioral Sciences Department and asked them to validate the questionnaires that the researchers made. 3. Once the questionnaires are validated, the researchers conducted the study upon the agreed schedule of the deaf institution with the help of the teachers of the deaf adolescents. 4. The teacher explained (by using sign language) the instructions to the respondents in answering the questionnaires. 5. The respondents were given an unlimited time to answer the questions. 6. The researchers gathered the survey questionnaires. 7. The researchers organized the data collected from the answers of the respondents. 8. The researchers identified the scores of the respondents by using the scale of the questionnaires. 9. The researchers analyzed the levels and perception of sexual risk taking behaviors of the respondents. 10. The researchers analyzed the correlation between the levels and perception of sexual risk taking behaviors of the respondents. 11. The researchers formed conclusions and recommendations after the analysis of the data. MAJOR FINDINGS Based on the study conducted by the researchers, the following results were gathered: 1. Most of the respondents in the study are 19-21 years old. Big amount of the population of the respondents consisted of female deaf students. In addition, most of the respondent’ duration of deafness falls along at the range of 16-18 years. 2. Most of the respondents have an average level of sexual-risk taking behaviors. 3. Most of the respondents have high perception on sexual risky behaviors. 4. The correlation value in this study is -0.471 and the critical value is 0.288 which led to a decision to reject the null hypothesis (Ho) and accept the alternative hypothesis (Ha). There is a significant relationship between the level and perception of sexual risk taking behaviors. The correlation value is a negative correlation which means that when one variable (X) in the study goes up; another variable (Y) of the study goes down. In this study, as the respondents’ level of sexual risk taking behavior goes down, the respondents’ level of perception of sexual risk taking behavior goes up. CONCLUSION 1. Most deaf adolescents are on the stage of late adolescence. Thus, it is also concluded that adolescents either they are normal or have a disability have the ability to develop sexually. Most of the adolescents’ population is composed of female. Deaf adolescents’ duration of deafness falls mostly on the pre-lingual stage. They have been deaf even before they learned some words. 2. Majority of the respondents have average level of sexual risk taking behaviors. Respondents are likely to participate in pre- marital sex, unprotected sex and sex with multiple or casual partners. 3. Majority of the respondents have high perception on sexual risk taking behaviors. Respondents are highly aware and knowledgeable regarding pre- marital sex, unprotected sex and sex with multiple or casual partners. 4. There is a significant relationship between the respondents’ level and perception on sexual risk taking behavior. Thus, this means that the respondents’ high awareness in sexual risk taking behavior affects them not to engage in sexual risky behaviors. This is since the respondents are already highly aware on the sexual risky acts; they know how to act properly when they are engaging into these sexual behaviors. RECOMMENDATIONS Administration Continue and enhance the curriculum and have an extensive discussion about sexual risk taking behaviors and the sexually transmitted diseases that they can get through these behaviors so that deaf adolescents will have a larger perspective about themselves and thus, they can protect themselves from the diseases as well. Counselors Propose programs about sexual risk taking behaviors and its implication to the deaf adolescents health, for them to have better understanding about this kind of matter. SPED Teachers SPED teachers not just in deaf institutions but in other special institutions as well, should have a wide, concrete and clear discussion about sexual risk taking behaviors for them to have more excellent understanding, to have an awareness, to be sensitive enough with their surroundings, to act more maturely, and also to function as normal as other people do. Parents Explain thoroughly to their child with hearing impairment or disability about sexual risky behaviors and its consequences and implication to one’s health. Explaining thoroughly to their child about this matter will help them to become more aware about this matter and to understand themselves more. Parents should also educate themselves regarding the condition of their child for them to be sensitive enough for their child’s need and ability to grasp knowledge that they would be imparting. Respondents Continue to seek and learn more about sexual risky behaviors and its implication to their health for them to be able to take good care of themselves and to have a better understanding and perspective about themselves. Other Disabled Individuals Every people whether disabled person or not has similar sexual urges and thus, learning more about sexual risky behaviors, sex and its implication about one’s health would help them to have a better understanding and perspective about one self, to help them take good care of themselves, to act maturely, to be more sensitive with such things, and to function like normal people do. Future Researchers Future researchers should use a bigger population. (e.g. adding more respondents coming from another or different institutions.). They can also use another research design such as descriptive survey method. In addition, interviews (of the family or relatives) should be conducted to get a better background of the respondents involved in the study. This will give a more in- depth information about the respondents which would be essential to the study. Moreover, demographics such as cultural background, socio- economic status, and religion should be identified to determine if these affect the variables of the study. Time allocation should be properly planned to prepare for the study and to avoid rushing things.
