Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University – Dasmariñas Address: Dasmariñas, Cavite Proponents: Sarno, Jerlyn M. Sausa, Florenz April L. Saylon, Alelie C. Funding Source: Parents Cost: Php 10, 000 Date Started: July 2008 Date Submitted: March 2009 Objectives of the Study A. General To study and gain knowledge about what it means to live with muscular dystrophy, and to enhance these children’s dignity as a person despite of their situation, to help them build their self – esteem and to make them realize their worth and that there are people who are always willing to help them and provide them the interventions they needed so that they will have a better future as a person. B. Specific To know the profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender, educational background, socio – economic status and interventions received. To determine the problems and coping strategies of the respondents encountered in terms of physical, emotional and social aspects. 14 Scope and Limitation This study covers one specific disability which is muscular dystrophy, problems and coping strategies in terms of physical, emotional and social aspects of two children from Carmona Elementary School. This study will not consider any specific type of muscular dystrophy. Methodology The research design used was descriptive research design, specifically case study method. The study was conducted in PWDCO (Person with Disability Coordinating Office) in Carmona Elementary School. There were only two children with muscular dystrophy, ages 11 and 12 that were included in the study. The research procedure consists of asking permission from the head of the institution, setting schedule for the interview, meeting the purposively selected participants, and finally the interview procedure. The instrument used to gather data are interview guide which consist of 53 open – ended questions that is divided into four parts, for the respondents, parents, teachers and the doctor. The analysis of data used was content analysis. 15 Summary of the Findings Based on the study conducted by the researchers, the following results were gathered: 1. The profile of the respondents in terms of age, that they are 11 and 12, both male, enrolled in elementary level, belong in a lower class income family and receiving interventions like medicines, medical appliances, therapy, counseling, tutorial classes and recreational programs. 2. Muscular Dystrophy is a disease that destroys and weakens the muscles of the person. It usually starts at the ages 2 – 6, often occurred in male children. 3. There are different problems that the children with muscular dystrophy encountered in terms of physical, emotional, and social aspects, but there are strategies that can make them cope with their disability. 4. The mother appears to be the most significant person to the two children with muscular dystrophy in terms of physical coping. Conclusions The researchers concluded the following based on the findings of the study: 1 The onset of muscular dystrophy of the two respondents starts at the early stage of development. They can still attend school despite of their conditions and receive interventions given the fact that they belong in a lower class income family. 16 2. The muscles of the two children gets weaker that leads to their inability to walk or even stand on their own, which limits their capacity to perform activities at home and in school. 3. The two children might have difficulties in dealing with other people and engage in fights with other children to defend themselves from those who are teasing them. Having muscular dystrophy can cause them to lose hope and they feel so bad about themselves. 4. The two children with muscular dystrophy can do things that the normal children can do like attending school, involvement in a game or sports activity and performing simple household chores. Recommendations In this study, the researchers recommend the following: 1. For future researchers, find more respondents with muscular dystrophy to gather more information 2. For all parents who have children with muscular dystrophy to send their children to a specialist to know the type of muscular dystrophy their children possess, and to get proper medications and interventions 3. For family members who have muscular dystrophy, to encourage them to participate in games or do daily tasks 4. For children with muscular dystrophy, to pursue their studies to nurture their intellect and develop specials skills 17 5. For all parents who have children with muscular dystrophy to be always alert to assure that their children will not get so tired and maintain their children’s body in a good posture 6. For the entire prospective individuals who wish to do the same research to include the different types of muscular dystrophy for the readers to have complete information about the topic 7. Findings from such studies would help to provide important insights of helping children with muscular dystrophy to cope with their disability 8. Readers, researchers and all families should poster understanding to the children’s situation and give them a better life while they are living Program recommendation 1. Giving time for the children with muscular dystrophy to get along with other children of the same case to share feelings and learn from each others coping strategies 2. Have a monthly small group discussion for the parents of children with muscular dystrophy 3. Have a meeting or conference together with the doctor, therapist, parents and other significant people who are helping the children with muscular dystrophy.
