Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University - Dasmariñas Address: Dasmariñas, Cavite Title: Social Adjustment of Mathematically Gifted High School Students Author: Rodel B. Roxas Joeven Cylfred H. Laugan Funding Source: Parents Cost: Php 5000 Date Started: July 2007 Date Finished: March 2008 Statement of the Problem: The proposed study generally aimed to mainly determine the social adjustments of mathematically gifted adolescents. Specifically, the study aimed to answer the following questions: 1. What is the demographic profile of research participant on the following? a. Age? b. Sex? c. Position in the family? 2. What is the social adjustment profile of the respondents in terms of family? 5 3. What is the social adjustment profile of the respondents in terms of peers? 4. What is the social adjustment profile of the respondents in terms of school? Scope and Delimitation: This study aimed to determine the social adjustment profile of mathematically gifted students. The researcher limited this paper to more specific group of one hundred twenty (120) selected mathematically gifted high school students in Immaculate Concepcion Academy Science Campus, fifteen (15) males and another fifteen (15) females per year level (first year to fourth year level). The participants in this study topped the limited study access of gifted high school students through the personal contacts, friends and referrals. Convenience sampling method was used. Methodology: In this study, the researchers used the Descriptive survey method, which is most appropriate in gathering information about the present study. According to Sanchez (1998), Descriptive method is fitted into more complex frames of relationships and the focus is on prevailing conditions, or how a person, group, or thing behaves or function in the present. Self made social adjustment test were administered. The responses of the respondents were scored with the use of appropriate statistical measures. 6 Conclusions: 1. Generally, the respondents got a moderate to very high social adjustment profile in terms of family. 2. In general, the respondents got a very low to high social adjustment profile in terms of peers. 3. Commonly, the respondents got a moderate to very high social adjustment profile in terms of school. Recommendations: 1. Future psychologists, SPED teachers and psychology students may try to administer psychological tests to further validate and have more reliable test results. 2. Future psychologists, SPED teachers and psychology students may also study other variables besides social adjustment of mathematically gifted high school students. 3. Future psychologists, SPED teachers and psychology students may try to use more comprehensive research method like case study.
