ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University – Dasmariñas Address: Dasmariñas, Cavite Title: Puff it: Derived Satisfaction and Its Influence to the Level of their Self – Concept Authors: Aguillon, Shiela Ann T. Mendoza, Nemoly R. Solis, Heidi R. Funding Source: Parents Cost: Php 7,000 Date Started: August 2007 Date Submitted: March 2008 Objectives of the Study: General: To determine the people satisfactions which were experienced by the senior student of Congressional National High School and how does smoking affects the self concept of the respondents. Specific: 1. To determine the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of: age, sex and gender, brand of cigarette, number of sticks of cigarette consumed everyday and to whom they learn to smoke. 2. To determine the satisfactions they get from smoking 3. To determine the perceive influence of smoking in the level of self concept of the respondents SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS The study focused on the different satisfactions experienced by the respondents the focus from smoking and its influence to their level of self concept. The entire respondents were 150 students or 30% of the total population of the entire fourth year high school students of Congressional National High School Dasmariñas, Cavite. However, only 35 students are chosen for the study. METHODOLOGY The study was a descriptive survey design with the use of convenience sampling technique. The researchers also used self made survey questionnaires and rotters locus of control standardized r\test to measure the respondents’ level of self – concept. CONCLUSION From the data gathered, the researchers had the following major findings: 1. Smoking even in high school seems to be very common. Out of 30% the population of senior students 23% of them are smokers. Peers or “barkada” ranked first to whom they learned to smoke. This can be attributed to social acceptability or peer pressures. 2. Inner strength or “lakas ng loob” has the highest frequency in the satisfaction the respondents derived out of smoking. It seems that thru smoking they gain more confidence and courage to push thru with their difficult situations in their life. 3. For the respondents’ self-concept, external locus of control dominated the respondents’ self- concept interpretation. These shows that environmental forces like the peers or other people around them, fate or chance greatly affects their behavior and coping ability. 4. From the data gathered, the researchers concluded that adolescent’s smokers are influence by other people and thru smoking they gain acceptance, confidence or inner strength in coping with their own problems. RECOMMENDATIONS From the concluded information, the researchers recommended the following: 1. The school administrators with the help of the Guidance Councilors are recommended to have a program for the students to be aware and educated regarding the harmful effects of smoking to ones health and well-being. 2. From the results of this study, all parents should have a consultation session to the teachers of his/her child to be informed of the performance of the child as well as being aware of the environment of their kids not only to give guidance but to ensure their safety. With this, the parents should give their child the proper guidance their child needs as adolescence and to provide precaution on the negative effects of smoking. 3. The students should be responsible enough to think of more necessary things to do. They should involve themselves into activities that will make their time worthwhile instead of having smoking as their past time and coping mechanism. 4. The future researchers should be more clear and accurate to the information to be gathered regarding this study simply because the essential facts that they can extract will benefit not only those who are not smoking but smokers as well. This can serve as a pre-caution to them
