METHODOLOGY: This research employed the descriptive research design particularly case study method. Sevilla (1998) defines descriptive research as a design to describe the nature of the situation as it exists at the time of the study and to explore the cause of particular phenomena. A case study method involves studying a few people over a few considerable period of time. This entails discovering and studying all the important variables, which have to contribute to the history of the subject (Sevilla, 1998). viii The researchers had chosen the descriptive research design and case study method because they studied the lives of family scavengers over a limited time. This study describes the life situations and social skill of selected family of scavengers in Payatas. The researchers studied six families of scavengers located in Payatas, which consists of mother, father, and approximately 3 to 5 children. In choosing the respondents in this study, they purposively selected family to be their respondents. MAJOR FINDINGS: 1. On the demographic profile of selected family of scavengers in terms of age, the parents age ranges from 20 years old to 30 years old and 40 years old to 50 years old while their children’s age ranges from 6 years old to 10 years old, 18 years old to 20 years old and 21 to 30 years old. In terms of gender, most of their children are male. On the educational attainment, some of the parents had accomplished Grade 1 to Grade 3, but one of the mothers had reached first year high school. Most of their children had finished their studies and some are on-going schooling. 2. Most parents are migrants from the province. Both father and mother have some education. Their average number of children is ix four with a range from four to seven. Most of their children are studying at grade school and others are working as scavengers. They work as early as 6 o’clock in the morning up to 7 o’clock in the evening. After they had collected all the recyclable materials from the dumpsite, they sell their wastes at the junk shops. If the family does not have anything to eat, they just go the dumpsite and spend few hours there to have instant budget for the day. 3. Most of the respondents say that they have smooth relationship within their community, vicinity and neighborhood. During small fights, they immediately fix it and understand one another. CONCLUSIONS: 1. The respondents of the research try their luck in the city and scavenging is the main convenient choice. They can earn money in a few minutes away from their home from the whole range of recyclable materials that sustain their household needs. 2. This situation of their life is one of the root causes why they lose hope and forget about their dreams and aspirations when they were still young. 3. They maintain a good and mutual relationship within the community they belong and most especially, they have good family relationship within their respective families. x RECOMMENDATIONS: 1. It is recommended that the future researchers try to look in the individual personality of the participants. 2. It is recommended that future researchers use other type of data gathering for further information on different aspects of validity. 3. It is recommended that Lasallians strengthen the action to eliminate forms of human suffering that contradict God’s plan for man by granting more scholarship programs for those students who cannot afford to study but qualified academically.
