Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University- Dasmariñas Address: Dasmariñas, Cavite Title: “Meaning, Purpose and Resiliency in Life among Student Achievers coming from Broken Homes” Authors: Paderes, JoAnn A. Santos, Carlo C. Date Started: June 2007 Date Finished: March 2008 Funding Source: Parents Cost: Php 7,000 General: This study determined the Meaning, Purpose and Resiliency in Life among Student Achievers coming from Broken Homes. Specific: Specifically, the study sought to answer the following questions: 1. What are the life experiences of the participants in relation to the separation of their parents in terms of: a. Initial reaction b. People and situations that helped c. Adjustments made after the separation of parents d. Personal and Social life e. Academic Achievement f. Goals in Life 2. What is the level of the purpose and meaning of life among the participants of the study? 3. What is the level of the resiliency among the participants of the study? Scope and Delimitation: The study is limited to De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, students; particularly, those student achievers who are in their junior and senior year. The study is based only on academic records. Criterion for selection will be on referral basis from the Guidance Office and Student Academic Services Office who know the respondents better. Not all student achievers were considered as participants but only those who agreed to take part were considered. There are several factors that contribute to the achievement among the participants but the focus of the study is on the meaning, purpose and resiliency in life as there influenced of the respondents’ academic development. Findings: The research was able to determine that: 1. Most of the research participants’ were very young (3yrs.old below), and were not affected. Doc and Sleepy who were 9 yrs.old and 10 yrs. old respectively were the ones who were affected by the separation of their parents. Sleepy expressed feelings of hatred toward the father. As for people and situations, all of the respondents were helped by their mother who took them after the separation. The situation that helped them adjust quite well is their being young at the time of the separation, thereby, getting used to the family set up at a young age. As for personal, social, and academic life, the respondents remained achievers despite of their parents’ separation. They took the family situation as a challenge than an obstacle in life. As for future goals, most of the respondents want to become successful so that they can prove to their biological fathers and others who may have looked down on them that they have risen above the seemingly negative circumstances of their family life. 2. As for the level of purpose and meaning in life, the other three out of seven participants have a level of a Definite Purpose in Life, the other three participants have a level of Indecisive Range, and only one out of seven participants has a level of Lack of Clear Meaning and Purpose in Life. The respondents do not think that it is not necessary to follow a certain path that will lead them to something that is productive. These participants probably clung to distorted truths so they do not have to feel pain. They were found to have constantly learned from experience especially for being a product of a broken home. 3. As for the level of resiliency, it is evident that only two of the respondents are highly resilient and the five participants obtained low scores. These students probably do not know how to regain stability in life, cope with unfair developments in an effective way, increase selfconfidence, and break-free from childhood prohibitions that prevent many people from effective coping. The problem of having low resiliency may or not be resolved by letting the children feel loved in their own families; especially in their situation now as a product of a broken home. 4. Children who are resilient and who have meaning and purpose in life are capable of going beyond the negative circumstances of their parents’ separation. That is, they are able to go on normally in their personal and social life and even excel academically. Conclusions: The younger the child at the separation of the parents, the less affected the children are and the easier the adjustments become. Mothers play a significant role in helping their children because of the separation of their parents. Personal, Social, and Academic Life of children are not much affected if children are trained to be resilient. Children who had meaning and purpose in life are able to go beyond the experience of separation of their parents. Although children coming from broken homes may claim that they have adjusted well, it is obvious that they still miss their biological fathers. They seem to be still in search for something missing. Recommendations: The following are highly recommended by the researchers: 1. The administration of universities must establish programs or seminars on family especially for students coming from broken homes so as to help them see their purpose in life and become a better person. 2. The researchers would like to recommend that psychology students must become more aware about resiliency, meaning, and purpose in life in order to help student-achievers from broken homes. 3. Student achievers coming from broken homes must learn from their experiences. 4. Future researchers must note of this significant issue and identify other aspects that affect individuals coming from this type of set-up. 5. It is recommended that children from broken homes see guidance counselors who can address their psychological needs.
