General: To have an in-depth study about the experiences and insights of women offenders. b. Specific: To determine what motivates women offenders to hold on to life inspite of being sentenced with life imprisonment without parole. Scope and Limitation This study primarily focuses on the factors that gives hope to go on with life in spite of life imprisonment without parole. This study shall only cover women offenders, women with children, and having not less than (5-10) five to ten years detained in Correctional Institute for Women (CIW). This study is limited to (9) nine women offenders and is not limited to a particular offense. There may be some studies done on women offenders but this study will have limited literature considering that the law on life imprisonment without parole in the Philippines is a newly imposed law. Significance of the Study This study acquires relevant information in relation to motivational factors which will be beneficial to the society at large; Psychiatrists, Guidance counselors, Psychologists and Social Workers; Youth; future researchers and women offenders. Methodology Research Design In this study, the researchers made use of the descriptive case study, which is the most suitable, and appropriate means of acquiring information. It is the most applicable design since the variables in this study will not be subjected to manipulation and control. Research Participants The research participants involved in the study were (9) nine women offenders ages 30 years old and above, with children and must not have less than (5-10) five to ten years imprisoned in Correctional Institute for Women (CIW). The research participants of the study were selected in a purposive manner and were not be limited to a particular offense. Research Instruments The researchers used an interview guide questions as part of the interview process as the main and primary tool in obtaining information from the responses of the research participants. Open ended types of questions are preferred to be used to enable the research participants to communicate freely and expressed their thoughts and feelings with ease. Research Procedure The researchers looked for (9) nine women offenders in Correctional Institute for Women (CIW) who were willing to participate and asked their permission to take part in the study. An interview with the (9) nine women offenders followed using the self-made interview guide questions validated by experts and also gave the resiliency trait test which consisted of twenty (20) items. The test sought to determine the motivational factors of women offenders that made them hold on to life in spite of their conviction of life imprisonment without parole. Aside from this, a self-made test was also given to come up with the ir answers pertaining to their personal thoughts and views based from their own experiences. Plan of analysis The researchers used the qualitative analysis since the information from responses basically came from the research participants, which encompass their views, occurrences in their lives, their emotional state and insights which are not quantifiable. Presentation, Interpretation and Analysis of Data Specific Problem 1. What are the experiences of the research participants inside the prison in terms of: a. daily activities · Livelihood · Household assignments · Sports b. common problems encountered · No communication with family · Insufficient funds in Livelihood · Collaboration c. most difficult experience · Life imprisonment penalty · Lack of financial sources · Time with family members · Family disruption · Monotony d. resiliency level The life of the women offenders inside prison including their daily activities, common problems and most difficult experience that they encountered, Most of the responses of the research participants shows that they are able to find ways to divert their attention. Specific Problem 2. What are the coping strategies of the research participants? Coping strategies of the research participants · Going involved with livelihood · Social interaction, qualitative and quantitative · Connecting with Spiritual life · Self acceptance and strength of mind · Support given by the family · Activities The coping strategies of the women offenders inside the prison. Most of their responses show that they are able to adjust themselves with the new environment that they are into and it also shows that they are able to cope up with the difficulties that they are facing. Specific Problem 3. What are the motivational factors of the research participant to hold on to life? Motivational factors of the research participants · Shape spiritual contentment and communication · Aspirations for the future and opportunity it holds · Family support and acceptance Most of the responses of the women offenders illustrates that the primary factors that influence or make them hold on to life are their families ang having faith in God. As mentioned, the offenders also gain support from one another considering the fact that they are in the same situation, serving the same sentence and are all longing to be back home. The support that these women offenders are receiving can be classified as social support from which they are gaining the motivation to hold on to life through the help of the people they love and those who surrounds them. Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation 1. What are the experiences of the research participants inside the prison in terms of: a. daily activities b. common problems encountered c. most difficult experience The problem that the research participants usually encountered is mostly pertaining to their families. Based from the interview, the responses of the research participants shows that the most stressful situation that they are experiencing inside the prison aside from being sentenced with life imprisonment, sometimes they feel bored and annoyed of their lives. They want to have some amusement and recreation or be entertained or rather entertained others. 2. What are the coping strategies of the research participants? The coping strategies that the research participants usually mentioned are the activities that they usually do and the various religious groups that enable them to have bible study. These two primary ways of coping helps them to enjoy themselves most importantly find time to forget their problems that are usually pertaining to the external aspect, most commonly the situation of their families. Another means of coping of the research participants in prison is to think positive in everything that happens to their life in prison and becoming strong individuals. 3. What are the motivational factors of the women offenders to hold on to life? The responses of the research participants show that they are motivated to hold on to life primarily by having faith in God. They believed that they will be able to conquer all of the difficulties that they are facing if God would be the source of their hope. They trust God and his plans in everything that concerns about their life.
