Abstract

Abstract Title: Implications of Online Gaming Addiction on the Subjective Well-Being Of Ragnarok Gamers Authors: Ronneth Rae A. Endozo, Bill Joseph B. Martinez, Kenneth Dane D. Mojica Cost: 20,000 Funding: Parents Date Started : July 2007 Date Finished: February 2008 Objective: To know the insight of the people who are engaging their self into online gaming. Methodology : The descriptive case study design is intended to gather possible information about existing condition and situation. The main intention in applying this research design is to describe the nature of the situation as it existed on the time of the study and to explore the particular phenomena. Yin (1989) Findings 1. People can get addicted to online gaming regardless of age, sex, religion, educational attainment, and economic status. 2. The Subjective well-being test administered to the online gamers who participated in the study revealed low levels for all the seven participants (100%). 3. As for implications of online gaming on the level of Subjective wellbeing of the participants, results of the test yielded low levels in terms of subjective well-being for all the participants. All of them said that they are happy and fulfilled with their life. This is not consistent with the low rating on subjective well-being test. Rather, interviews with them also further showed online gaming as escape goats or defense mechanisms employed as temporary relief to fill up the void within. This is because in an online game, there is a community within it where one feels a sense of belongingness.
