Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University-Dasmarinas Address: Dasmarinas, Cavite Title: Help-seeking Behavior of two Ethnic Groups in the North Authors: Irma Joy Rallonza, Yshra Vienna Reyes Funding Sources: Parents and Hard Work Cost: P22, 000 Date Started: July 2007 Date Finished: 22 February 2008 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY A. GENERAL The study aimed to determine help-seeking behavior of two ethnic groups in the North. B. SPECIFIC 1. To know the concept of help-seeking behaviors in the Bontoc and Ifugao tribes. 2. To know the common problems encountered by the Bontoc and Ifugao people when they try to seek help as well as the persons who are able to help them. 3. To know the differences in the help seeking behaviours of people in the Bontoc and Ifugao isolated community. SCOPE AND DELIMITATION The researchers explored on the participants’ help – seeking behaviors, in particular, focus was only on the common personal problems that have to do with counselling or dealing with emotional and social issues in their lives. It did not include problems that concern physical, economic, political and religious practices. The study limited its scope to the ethnic groups situated in the North – central Cordillera Region, specifically the two subgroups of the Igorots namely the Bontoc and Ifugao tribes. Only authority figures in each community were chosen for interview taking into consideration their ages are fifty (50) and above, and high status in the community, due to the vast number of their population. Participants in the study are limited only to people who had experiences seeking help with their emotional and social lives. METHODOLOGY The study employed descriptive – comparative research design to focus on the help – seeking behaviors of ethnic minorities in the North specifically the two subgroups, the Bontoc and Ifuagao. The researchers also utilized patanong-tanong method and an in – depth – interview in gathering data from the respondents of the study. The researchers lived with the respondents and observed the way they seek help and used a semi–structured interview guide during the interview. RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY The respondents belonged to one of the two ethnic minorities in the North, ages fifty (50) and above, have high status in the community and have experienced seeking help from other people inside or outside their group. They respondents were also chosen depending on their ability to understand the researchers’ language and their level of education depending on the discretion of their group leader. Major Findings Based on the data collected, the following results have been obtained: 1. The participants from the two ethnic groups—the Bontoc and the Ifugao groups seek help in almost every aspect of their lives. They conceptualize help-seeking as asking for assistance, guidance and counselling similar with the concept of help-seeking in the lowlands. 2. All the participants from the two ethnic groups admitted that land ownership is the common problem in their villages because of poverty. Family problems and misunderstandings also surfaced as part of their common problems. They seek help from the elders in their communities as well as from their parents but mostly the elders are given more importance with matters like counselling. 3. The two ethnic groups have the same concept in help-seeking as well as with the common problems they experience in their villages. They also have the same concept in choosing the elders in their communities and the only difference is the terms they use to call them. Conclusions From the findings, researchers conclude that: 1. The respondents experienced seeking help from the elders of the community in matters pertaining to psychological and other aspects as well. They sought for the help of the elders without hesitations and it was really apart of their culture. 2. The two ethnic groups experience problems or usual problems as regards land ownership because the respondents are farmers who own a small track of land. The main cause of this occurrence is poverty. 3. The ethnic groups are resistant to changes in their communities. Medical assistance and road construction are not readily accepted by the respondents. 4. The two tribes have the same concept of seeking for help and the manner of choosing them. They seek for advice from the elders in their community. These elders are chosen by the whole community based on the elder’s good image and lifestyle. The achievements and possessions are also included. 5. The help-seeking behaviors of the two ethnic groups are the same. The persons that they approach for advice are chosen in the same manner. 6. The two groups have concepts of individual and group counselling. This finding contradicts the notion that Asians naturally keep information inside the family and do not seek the help of other people. Recommendations Based from the generated results, the recommendations of the study are hereby presented: Future researchers used to tackle the types of psychological problems that the ethnics experience. 2. Future researchers may include other ethnic tribes in the Igorot community to complete the data on the help-seeking behaviors of ethnic groups in the North. 3. Future researchers may study other ethnic groups in the Philippines like the Mangyans in the South for comparative analysis. 4. Counsellors and clinicians should know and familiarize themselves with the culture of the minority groups. 5. The government must continue to support the ethnic groups and provide assistance in terms of giving seminars on farming techniques while maintaining their culture.
