Abstract

ABSTRACT Name of Institution: De La Salle University – Dasmariñas Address: Dasmariñas, Cavite Title: “The Effects of Noise on the Cognitive Performance of the First Year Communication Arts Students of De La Salle University- Dasmariñas” Authors: Cindy Q. Angue Regina Mae A. Cantada Jelly Bee B. Junio Funding Source: Parents Cost: P 10,000 Date Started: September 2007 Date Completed: March 2008 Objective of the Study: General: To find out the effects of noise on the cognitive performance of the randomly selected subjects Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions: a. Is there a significant difference on the mean scores of the controlled group and the three experimental groups? b. Is there a significant difference in the cognitive performance among the different treatment groups? Scope and Limitations The subjects for the study are the First Year Communication Arts students of the Academic Year 2007- 2008. Stratified random sampling technique was utilized to assign the subjects to the treatment condition they belong to. The extraneous variables, threats to internal and external validity are controlled through utilizing a cover story, counterbalancing among others. The goal of the study is to determine only the effects of the different levels of noise when exposed to the subjects when taking a standardized test. Methodology A multi- group experiment was conducted thus a One-Way ANOVA is the statistical treatment used. The Ravens Progressive Matrices (RPM) test was considered to be the instrument that can measure the cognitive performance of the randomly selected First Year AB Communication Arts subjects while being exposed to either of the different levels of noise for twenty (20) minutes. Furthermore, ethical and standard procedures in psychological testing were observed throughout the experimental study. Major Findings Through the statistical treatment, the study has gathered the following results: 1. The controlled group acquired the highest mean score. The result indicates that the absence of noise while taking the test positively influenced the cognitive performance of the subjects. While the group exposed to alternating sound level gained the lowest mean score that shows its negative effect. 2. At 0.05 level of significance, the F computed 0.286 is less than the F tabulated (3, 36) 2.86; therefore, the exposure of the subjects to noise and no noise did not significantly affect their cognitive performance which was measured through the use of RPM test. Recommendations The following recommendations are proposed by the researchers. 1. Students should identify and practice techniques that can help them lessen the effects of noise. 2. Educators’ teaching techniques must be flexible to meet the needs of the class when unwanted sound is present during discussions. 3. School administrators should not allow classes to be conducted near any source of unwanted sounds. 4. Law-makers should formulate policies that can minimize the negative consequences of noise pollution. 5. Future researchers must conduct further studies and make appropriate actions on the effects of aircraft and railway noise on the health and mental well-being of individuals.
