Abstract

The Sense of Self-Preservation is a rarely studied psychological variable that can be linked to Aggression. In this study, fifty (50) particip ants comprising of twenty-five (25) males and twenty-five (25) females were tasked to answer two self-report tests, namely the Aggression Questionnaire (AQ) and the Sense of Self-Preservation Scale for the researcher to correlate th eir level of Sense of Self-Preservation to their level of Aggression. At α = 0.05 and critical value of r = 0.273, the result shown that the researcher hypothesis of the tw o variables being moderately to strongly correlated to one another should be rejected if test ed against the obtained r of -0.22. Objectives of the Study A. General - To link the Sense of Self -Preservation to Aggression. B. Specific - To prove that within Imus societ y, Sense of Self-Pre servation should be moderately to strongly correlate negatively. Scope and Coverages : This study includes the aspect of self-pre servation as a psychological trait to be tested in the light of the amount of aggres sion self-reported by the respondents. Since most of the previous researches related to violence somehow showed that most people learn to be aggressive and vi olent through social learning theory, this study aims to include in the picture the genetic factor of self-preservation through quantifying their self-protective behavior. This study on the correlation of the leve l of self-preservation and aggression levels is done to a randomly selected sample of participants ages 30-55 living in the city of Imus and that the result of the research may not be very co nclusive at the macro-level. Methods : 1. The researchers handed out survey forms in most parts of Imus to determine the research respondents. From those w ho answered that they have grown up watching violent shows or playing violen t games the respondents was drafted. A minimum of fifty (50) respondents were taken into account. 2. Following the collation of possible responde nts, the researchers then gave the respondents two (2) self-repor t tests, namely the Aggr ession Questionnaire (AQ) and Sense of Self-Preservation Questionnair e which tried to measure the level of aggression and level of sense of self-preserv ation of a person. This is to satisfy the conditions given und er a correlational study (Aronson et al, 2012). 3. After obtaining the figures needed to pr edict whether a higher level of self- preservation would lead to a person not to learn most of the aggressive behaviors he has seen before and his/her level of aggression, the resear chers proceeded in computing for the correlation coeffi cient (obtained r) of the scores. Significance : This study hopes to shed light on how rest rictive parents censor the content of their child’s viewing and playing materials. There are tell-tale si gns to know on whether your child will be susceptible to learning aggressive behavior or not. This research is to reinforce the stance of social learning theory on the nature ingredient of learning aggres sion and its ability to explain the acquired aggressive behavior of people. Bandura’ s theory may be more conc retized and explained through this new addition in the list of things that can be considered a fact or in unleashing human aggressive tendencies. This should help futu re researchers of the topic to widen their horizon regarding the learning principle concerning aggression and violence. Conclusion : 1. More than half of the sampled re spondents for the study are highly self- preserving. 2. Less than half of the sampled res pondents are outwardly aggressive. 3. Sense of self-preservation and aggressi on are not significantly correlated and sense of preservation is not a di rect mediator to aggression. Recommendation : 1. With sampling and sample size as one of the limitations of this study, we thereby recommend to the future research ers who might refer to this study that they employ a probability sampling and a bigger sample size for more statistically relevant results. Also, se lf-preservation was almost never studied about in the field of Psyc hology, specifically w ithin the domains of evolutionary psychology and biological ps ychology, despite the fact that this one facet of human instinct should be seen in the light of psychology too and not just in philosophy, as it definitely shows basic human respons e to certain situations which compromises their existence. Since this study only tried to link the level of aggressive behavior to the level of sense of self-preservation of this research’s respondents, th e researchers recommend too that this psychological variable be studied in correlation with either self-concept, biological/social kinship, or neuroscience, to establish whet her this variable is truly chemical or genetic in nature. Furthermore, the re searcher-made sense of self-preservation scale’s reliability coefficient predictive validity was not established due to lack of pilot testing on the same group of re spondents, and so they recommend also hat the future researchers of either this study or variable scrutinize and test the reliability and validity of the scale using Spearman-Rho coefficient. The sampling that was used in this st udy was haphazard sampling with an N = 50 and as it is, not conclusive nor with strong validity by it s barest implications. A minimum of one hundred (100) respondent s should be taken into account next time around. The researchers have found out during the process of gathering literature in support of this study that self-preservat ion, or its equivalent in philosophy the theory of well-being, is not present in any discourse book in psychology. They hope that by focusing about this barely treaded upon human trait, this will be touched upon or studied even more, as they have already collated possible literatures and researches to start this whole endeavor. On the basic premise or hypothesis that self -preservation is more or less linked to the display of aggressive behaviors, self -preservation may yet also be linked with self-concept, as the conceptio n of the gestalt is basically geared on the belief that the self exists and must be preserved. W ith regard to the evolutionary features of this variable, biological and/or social kinship proves to be one interesting variable to look into, and in reflecting may make a good post-experimental research with massive implications towards the social concept of altruism and pro-social behaviors. Researchers who wish to delve into the anatomical level of this variable may look into how neurotransmitters play in this scheme of immediate response forming when it comes to the survival of the self
