Abstract

The aim of the study is to know the lived experiences of nurses as they had been exposed to tragic human experiences such as death and suffering of people due to an illness and what is the God - image and empathy they acquired due to this phenomenon. Method: The method used in exploring the lived experiences of nurses ’ is transcendental Phenomenology which examines human experiences through the descriptions provided by the people involved. These experiences are called lived experiences . The goal of phe nomenological studies is to describe the meaning that experiences hold for each subject (Donalek, 2004). Ma jor F indings: The lived experiences of nurses, their God - image and empathy have been incorporated into themes. The nurses ’ lived experiences comprise of dealing with anxious patients and relatives, dealing with pitiful situation and hiding one’s feelings through professionalism, dealing with traumatic experiences and having feelings of guilt and dismay due to limited capability to alleviate the patient s’ suffering and prevent their death. The nurses God image includes their perception of God as life giver and taker , as guide and helper and God as worthy of Service . It also includes their experiences of coming to terms of questioning God and submitting t o his unidentified purposes. The nurses’ empathy c omprises of three themes namely: placing one’s self to the situation of the patients , treating the patients as family members and sensing the agony of patients psychologically . Conclusion: The lived experiences of nurses suggest that caring for suffering and dying people is a very complicated job since they have to deal with various people with different concerns, people who are anxious for their own health condition and the relatives who ar e anxious of their loved ones condition. Nurses have to hide their own feelings and concerns in order to effectively deal with patients and to be courageous for the sake of patients. Moreover, the nurses’ empathy towards patients is evident and considered as an important key to effective nursing care. Nurses also have positive regard to God despite of their exposure to suffering and dying people which implies that they do not blame God for people’s tragic human experiences.
