Abstract

There is a dearth of quantitative research assessing the effects of academic motivation, seating arrangement and their interactive effects on the cheating tendencies and behaviors of graduating high school students. This study is a 3 (Academic Motivation: Intrinsic, Extrinsic or Amotivation) × 2 (Seating Arrangement: Free or Assigned) between - subjects experimental design with six treatments. Through simple random sampling, one hundred fifty fourth year public high school students (73 males, 77 f emales) participated. Participants in each treatment (n=25) answered an academic motivation scale, a mechanical - spatial aptitude test and an academic cheating survey which evaluated their self - reported cheating beliefs and tendencies during the aptitude te st examination. A hidden camera, with consent, was used to observe the cheating behaviors of the participants. Data were analyzed using two - way analysis of variance. At α 0.05, results present that academic motivation, seating arrangement and their interactive effects significantly impact cheating. Extrinsic motivation groups and free seating arrangement groups acquired higher scores on the cheating survey and exhibite d more cheating behaviors than other groups. Moreover, the combination of extrinsic motivation and free seating arrangement greatly stimulate cheating tendencies and behaviors. Extrinsic motivations make learning less important or worthwhile for students, while free seating arrangement makes cheating easier. Findings imply that students should prioritize learning over other academic motivations and both educators and school administrators should implement learning - oriented classroom goals and an appropriate , comfortable assigned seating arrangement for students in order to inculcate academic integrity in their students’ practices
