Abstract

Many researchers have focused on enhancing gratitude of individuals in a near death situation. However, little evidence has focused on enhancing the gratitude of family members of those individuals they leave behind. Thus, the present study tested whether gratitude would increase with the presence of gratitude journal, specifically on Filipino mothers with terminally-ill child. The results revealed that when one confronts life-threatening situation of a family member, appreciation and gratitude tend to increase. However, expressing themselves through gratitude journal helps increase more their gratitude. Appreciation of simple things in their lives, sense of abundance, and social appreciation revealed to have significant results. In addition, encouragement and support from members of the family, friends, and even from other people they don’t know help them cope with their current situation.
