Abstract

There are already a lot of researches that indicate why children engage in doing crimes such as theft, trespassing, drugs, etc. This research will be focusing on one category, the separation experiences of the child with a significant person and what may be the implications on self, family and community. The researchers chose this topic because there are not much research regarding the separation of a child to a significant person. A significant person may refer to a parent, relative, friend or anyone close to them and separation may refer to separation of parents, a person leaving the child’s life, a death, neglect, divorce and many more. The researchers wanted to know their experiences and what effect had it done to them and if the experience led to them to doing crimes. The research is a descriptive case study, the researchers interviewed ten children in conflict with the law at Bahay Kalinga, Dasmarinas one by one to get the desired input. All of the children had experienced separation from a significant person and there are three main categories that they experienced, a death of a mother or grandparent and then the father leaving, leaving of parents to the care of another, leaving of friends and neglect from the family. When they were asked if they think that because of the separation, they lost their way, most of them said yes and were looking for the guide of their parents. The implications have shortterm and long-term effects, not just for the child but sometimes for the whole family. But the implications that were seen through the children were they had a fear of being alone, trust, and commit to anyone that might get close to them, they might neglect themselves because their thoughts are there isn’t anyone who cares for them anymore and that they have aggressive behavior. In the family, there is a lack of communication and in the community, the society’s structure suffers from the trauma that a family bears that is why the society has a weak foundation because family is the basic unit of a society. For this reason, the moral and cultural aspects also endure the results of separation experiences. The significance of the research is that there is an impact to the child when being separated from a person close to them and has a tendency to lead to life of crime without the proper guidance or assurance.
