Abstract

The research study was conducted primarily to see the effect of positive reinforcement on the academic performance, specifically, spelling scores of Grade III pupils of Manresa School. Positive reinforcement (reward) determines the behavior of an individual whether he strives to get the things he wants or he remains the same, paying no attention to the reinforcement. This study tried to answer the following questions: 1. What could be the role of positive reinforcement on the academic performance of Grade. 2. How would you assess the academic performance of Grade III pupils of Manresa School? 3. Is there a significant effect on the academic performance of the experimental group when given positive reinforcement? 4. Is there a significant effect on the academic performance of the control group when not given positive reinforcement? FINDINGS On the basis of gathered data and information by the researchers, the following were revealed: 1. The role of positive reinforcement has proven to be of great influence on the academic performance, particularly, spelling scores of Grade III pupils of Manresa School. Positive reinforcement (reward) increased the response of the pupils through the improved scores of pre-test and post-test given to the experimental group. Reward acted as a stimulus which created a very revealing power to convince students to strive harder for higher scores. Reward determined the change in the behavior of the participants concerning their study habits which led them to an excellent academic performance. 2. Validity of spelling test administered is a good assessment on the academic performance of Grade III pupils of Manresa School. Spelling can greatly represent and aid the writing abilities of the participants since writing can be considered essential and vital to the system of education, research, and to world culture. 3. There is a significant effect on the academic performance, specifically, the spelling scores of Grade III pupils of Manresa School when they were given positive reinforcement. The scores between pre-test and post-test of the experimental group have projected a big difference involving a high increase in scores and a big improvement in their academic performance, 4. There is no significant effect on the academic performance, specifically, spelling scores of Grade III pupils of Manresa School when not given positive reinforcement. The scores between pre-test and post-test of the control group showed a very low difference compared to that of the experimental group.
