Abstract

Determine other-induced altered state of consciousness as a component of the healing process practiced by the Hanuoo Mangyans of Mindoro. This study utilized the idiographic method with an ethnographic approach. The respondents of the study were a healer of the Hanunoo Mangyans and ten Hanuoo Mangyans who undergone treatment from the healer. An in-depth interview guide was utilized for the study. The Hanuoo Mangyan healing practices originated from the tribal ancestors. The power of magdadaniw who is the folk medicine practitioner of the Hanunoo Mangyans was believed to have come from a white stone that was given to them by the good sprits living in the lunok or balete tree. The magdadaniw warmed the hearts of the Hanunoo Mangyan tribe in whom they assert themselves in a very unique existence. He has won the acceptance of the Hanunoo Mangyan society and had become an integral part of it. The effectivity of the healing process practiced by the Hanunoo Mangyan is attested by the patients healer. The magdadaniw has four methods of curing: the hilot, used for treating bones and joint problems; pagbulong that is very similar to herbal medicine; magpara used in curing the maladies caused by the evil sprits and the magdaniw which is to drive the evil spirits away from the house and from a person.
